Football Wraps Up Spring Practice

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College football team wrapped up spring practice on Saturday morning with a full pads scrimmage at Gibbs Stadium. The practice was the last of fifteen sessions during March and April for the Terriers.

After individual position group work, the team had a period of seven-on-seven focused on the red zone. The scrimmage was then divided into four segments, On the opening play of the first segment, Bryce Corriston found Gavin Batt for a 50-yard reception and the drive was capped by a seven-yard touchdown run by J.T. Smith. Other highlights of the first segment were a first down run by Josiah Stevens, a sack by Anthonie Lattany and pass break-ups by Adonis Garcia and Gabriel Harris.

In the second segment, Tyler Parker and D.J. Tyler each had a first down catch while Adonis Garcia another pass break-up and Gabriel Harris had an interception. At the midpoint of the scrimmage, Bridger Jones, Devery Cagle and Sam Spence made a combined 7-of-8 field goals from between 30 and 45 yards, with the lone miss hitting the upright.

Highlights of the third segment included a first down catch by D.J. Tyler and a 23-yard touchdown reception by Ryan Peacock. Jacobi Hatter broke up a pass and Franklin Smith recovered a fumble. In the final segment of red zone work, Pauly Seeley hit Jack Purdy for a 24-yard touchdown. Bryce Corriston had a pair of first down passes to Kyle Pinnix and J.T. Smith. Amari Odom had two touchdown passes to Tyler Parker. After an interception by Javario Tinch, Eric Handley completed a seven-yard touchdown pass to Corey Seay.

"We had a really good spring and are a totally different football team," said head coach Shawn Watson. "That starts with our winter conditioning period as we got bigger and stronger. We brought in some players midyear that helped us in a few key positions. On the entirety of spring we got a lot in and were able to get a lot done in the fundamental techniques. We were able to teach a lot of situational football as well, especially with our quarterbacks. I am pleased and this is the farthest we have been along, part of which is having guys that have been around for a bit."

The Southern Conference officials threw just five flags during the live plays. A preseason depth chart will be released in late July in conjunction with the Southern Conference Football Media Day.

The regular season will begin on Saturday, August 31 at Gardner-Webb.
