Orchid Research Newsletter No. 45
(January 2005)
Introduction
With a sigh of relief (and exhaustion), it is a pleasure to
announce that volume 4 of Genera Orchidacearum will
be submitted for publication to Oxford University Press
at the end of January for publication in late 2005.
Three years in the making, this volume covers part 1 of
subfamily Epidendroideae – 13 tribes (including the
enormous Epidendreae) and 210 genera with 35
contributors from Europe and the Americas. Volume 4
will be almost as large in scope as the first three
volumes combined.
Apart from the most recent DNA data used in generic
circumscriptions, this volume will be special as it will
illustrate genera rarely seen in line drawings and/or
colour images. For all genera, we provide complete
nomenclature, description, and distribution (with map)
as well as what is known about anatomy, palynology,
cytogenetics, phytochemistry, phylogenetics, ecology,
pollination, uses, and cultivation where applicable. As
specified clearly in the preface to the first volume, this
series does not treat physiology, phytoalexins, tissue
culture, mycorrhiza, etc., as they have been covered
elsewhere. Rather, Genera Orchidacearum is
principally a systematic treatment focusing on those
disciplines that have been shown to have systematic
utility.
It is equally clear to all contributors and to Dr. Robert
L. Dressler himself, to whom the series is dedicated,
that the vast body of knowledge on orchids including
DNA data now far exceeds the synthetic capabilities of
one individual. Bob Dressler has consistently shown
that he welcomes new data and has never hesitated to
modify his opinions in the light of, say, a new
cladogram, nor has he ever failed to give credit to the
work of others in revising his classification. Indeed, at
the age of 77 he is still an inspiration to three
generations of orchid scientists, all three of which are
represented among the contributors to volume 4.
Without Bob around to instill his spirit, write generic
treatments, and offer advice, I simply cannot imagine
where we would be. – Alec Pridgeon
Upcoming Conferences
18th World Orchid Conference (11-20
March 2005)
Registration forms and hotel bookings for what
promises to be a spectacular World Orchid Conference
and Show in Dijon, France, are now online at
http://www.woc2005.org . The provisional lecture
programme has been recently added to the website.
You may also download a .pdf file with complete
information on all the social events, optional tours, and
post-Conference tours. We urge those planning to
First Scientific Conference on Andean
Orchids (11-13 November 2005)
The First Scientific Conference on Andean Orchids,
sponsored by Ecuagenera, Cia. Ltda., will be held 11-
13 November 2005 in Gualaceo, Ecuador. The
Conference will not be associated with any show, and
there will be no social events. However, there will be
multiple-day pre-conference tours for registrants on a
first-come, first-served basis as well as local tours to
Cuenca, Sigsig, and Chordeleg. This is an excellent
opportunity to see first-hand the incredible diversity of
Ecuador's orchids with expert guides from Ecuagenera.
There can be no collecting on the tours without a
permit from the Ecuadorian government, but plants
from Ecuagenera will be available for sale and CITES
export documents and phytosanitary certificates will be
provided on-site.
This promises to be an extraordinary experience for all
registrants, many of whom will be students from
Ecuador and other countries. Registration will be
limited to the first 150 applicants. You may register
online at http://www.ecuagenera.com and see links to
tours, speakers, accommodations, etc. there, too.
Please feel free to contact either Pepe Portilla
( ecuagen@c.ecua.net.ec ) or Alec Pridgeon
( a.pridgeon@kew.org ) if you need further information.
