A sturdy orchid, growing in fields and in high, rocky areas.

A tuberous perennial with enlarged underground structures for storage of nutrients.

Flowers

The flower stalk is cylindrical, with up to 50 flowers. The sepals and petals form a deep purple hood. The pale pink or white lip, spotted with purple, has 2 narrow ‘arms’ and 2 ‘legs’ with a tiny protuberance between. Fragrant.

Leaves

Elliptic oval leaf, Lanceolate leaf is lance-shaped: long and widest in the middle. Rosette, oval to long, pointed, mid green, shiny and fleshy. Before flowering the leaves are reddish at the tip.
