Product Description
Popular and truly excellent ornamental grass with wonderful vertical structure and very long ornamental value from May to February, adaptable, drought tolerant and tough.
First grass that received Perennial Plant of the Year Award in 2001.
Forms very narrow vertical clumps, 1.5-2' leaves at the base /5-6' is full height with flowering stems, 2' wide.
This is cool season grass (the major growth happens in cooler part of the year), so leaves and flowers appear very early - in May, pink-purple typical grass flowers change to yellow and in winter pale brown-yellow. Feathery flowers stay on the plant until you cut the plant back in pre-spring, they persist even through snow winter (unless there is very heavy and wet snowfalls).
Best in full sun (flowers a bit less in half shade), adaptable to all soil including clay, happy on average rain fall (medium-dry to moist soil), drought tolerant.
This is hybrid calamagrostis with sterile seeds, that doesn't self seed, it's probably natural hybrid between Calamagrostis arundinacea (Europe) and Calamagrostis epigejos (Asia). Cultivar name honors famous German nurseryman Karl Foerster, who discovered this plant in the Hamburg Botanical Garden in the 1930s and later introduced into commerce in 1950.
Plant is deer and rabbit resistant, black walnut tolerant and hardy in zones 4 to 7.
Versatile use grass - awesome in public spaces, private gardens, modern landscaping and modern architecture, but looks good in any flower bed in full sun, as a background for lower perennials, and naturalistic plantings or even cottage gardens or prairie type of gardens. Can be used in rain gardens.
Can be combined with very wide selection of perennials and other grasses, naturally looks good daisy like flowers of Echinacea, Rudbeckia, Coreopsis, but also Perovskia, Caryopteris, grasses like Panicum, Sporobolus, Spodiopogon or Pennisetum.
