Get creative with foliage

Contrasting shapes and textures will give you a fabulous display

The Times

Good gardens start with foliage not flowers, and some of the most interesting gardeners abjure flowers altogether, relying on foliage to supply all contrast of colour, texture and form. Colour palettes that are dominated by green give the illusion of space. When there are no flashes of eye-catching orange or red to distract us, we also take in the scene more slowly, which creates a relaxed feeling. If you mix leaf shapes, sizes and textures — incorporating a balance of deciduous and evergreen forms — you will create an interesting tapestry of foliage that looks fabulous all year round.

How to create a foliage-filled garden Without flowers, gardeners are forced to focus on contrasting leaf shapes and textures; they can help to group your plants
