Commonly known as Sage, this plant is grown for its foliage and rich display of flowers from summer through autumn. During this time, it produces slender, flower spikes with small, purple flowers which sit neatly above the purple-grey leaves. The leaves are often used for cooking, while the flowers are great for attracting butterflies and birds. All parts of the plant are aromatic and produce a lovely fragrance when crushed. It typically grows to 40 cm tall and the same wide, performing best on a well-drained, sheltered site in full sun. It is frost hardy once established and does require good levels of moisture during dry periods. This plant is ideal for herb gardens, mixed plantings, cottage gardens, borders, or container growing. A mass planting really suits this plant and gives a very rewarding display.
