1994 RAP expedition. All data for “Falso Paquisha” (4th column) from Vivar and Arana-Cardo
(1994). Taxonomy largely follows Wilson and Reeder (1993). All species are represented by voucher
specimens except those marked (*). We thank Mario de Vivo for identifiying the squirrel, and A. L.

The following lists are from Patton et al. (1982). They were compiled during four years of ethnobio-
logical studies among the Aguaruna Jivaro people. Huampami is at the junction of the ríos Cenepa
and Comainas, and Kagka is on an eastern tributary of the Cenepa. A site in the Río Santiago basin
also was surveyed. We thank J. L. Patton for providing us with an updated version of this list, and
allowing its republication here.

1 Beach of the río Nangaritza (4 km by river upriver from Paquisha; 04°56’S, 78°40’W, 750 m) —
Water clear, pH 6.5, water temperature 21.5° C. Riverbed small rocks, current moderately rapid. At
a distance of 25 m from the riverbank, the river depth reaches 1.6 m. Beach 50 m wide. River banks
are deforested and covered in pasture. People living along the river are primarily miners, and one
frequently observes entire families washing gold. This mining disturbs the substrate, increasing the
amount of particles suspended in the water and consequently increasing the turbidity of the water.
2 Quebrada Mayaycu (2 km by river upstream from the mouth; 03°59’S, 78°38’W, 780 m) —
Stream 10 m wide; current very rapid, with a bed of large and medium-sized rocks, and no macro-
phytic vegetation; water clear. Water temperature 18° C, pH 7.0. The slope of the stream is steep,
with some waterfalls. Wide, rocky beaches, with abundant herbaceous vegetation on the banks.
Colonists have many farms in this area, which is near the roads that run between Los Encuentros to
La Punta and from Zamora to Guayzimi.
3 Canal de la Laguna de Ijisán (04°00’S, 78°37’W, 790 m) — Canal is 2 m wide, current rapid, bed
of gravel, sand, and small stones. Opens into a small oxbow of the río Mayaycu, which is 30 by 150
m, depth 1.2 m by the shore and 3 m in the middle. Abundant herbaceous and macrophytic vegeta-
tion, water somewhat turbid. pH reaches 7.5, water temperature 21° C. Borders of this lagoon, which
is very close to the highway to the Mayaycu and Pachicutza mines, are totally deforested.
4 Confluence of the ríos Numpatakaime and Nangaritza (04°20’S, 78°31’W, 950 m) — The
Numapatakaime is a black water river, the Nangaritza is a white water river. In the middle of the
confluence are small gravel and stone islands made of gravel and stone. River margins are forested,
although there are some clearings made by Shuar families.
5 Río Numpatakaime at Shaime (550 m upstream from Destacamento Shaime; 04°18’S, 78°28’W,
960 m) — Bed is sand and mud, pH 6.8, water temperature 20° C. Near the confluence of the two
rivers the current is slow; downstream current more rapid. River banks largely deforested, as there
are many Shuar communities here, with some remnants of original vegetation.
6 Río Nangaritza at Miazi (04°17’S, 78°40’W, 900 m) — Water clear, pH 7.5, water temperature
19°C, bed gravel and small stones. Current rapid, river width 40 m, many large rocks and various
islands in the stream. Here and upstream there are numerous Shuar settlements, which has resulted in
some deterioration of the river-edge habitats in the upper Nangaritza.
7 Unnamed tributary of the río Shaime (1 km upstream from Miazi; 04°18’S, 78°41’W, 890 m) —
Water clear, but with a great deal of algae in the middle of the stream. pH 6.3, stream width 2.5 m.
Bed sand and gravel. Shore with abundant forest and herbaceous vegetation, stream covered by
bushes and herbs.
The systematic list follows the sequence proposed by Ortega and Vari (1986), as modified
by Ortega (1991).

At the collecting sites the water is neutral or slightly alkaline (pH 7.1-7.3), and the water tempera-
