More or Less: Bring back the Caramac

I have not seen these bars for decades, but apparently if I lived in the UK, I could enjoy them once again.

WEYBURN - Do you have a favourite candy or chocolate bar that you can’t readily buy anymore?

Mine would have to be the Caramac bar. A smooth, buttery, melt-in-your-mouth caramel flavoured bit of deliciousness.

I have not seen these bars for decades, but apparently if I lived in the UK, I could enjoy them once again.

For a fee, I could have some shipped here. But that would take too long, they may not be what I remember, and my money is better spent locally.

Two “retro” bars that I’ve come across lately are the Cuban Lunch and Rum & Butter.

Both of these bars have been revived by Canadian Candy Nostalgia.

The company’s founder, Crystal Regehr Westergard, brought back the Cuban Lunch in 2018. It was her Mother’s favourite bar, and Crystal wanted her Mom to be able to enjoy it once again.

In 2021, Crystal brought back her husband’s favourite, Rum & Butter.

They’ve been in the news a lot lately, due to a surplus of the gooey rum-flavoured filled chocolate bar. Issues with production caused an excessive number of bars to have an expiry date of June 2023.

Stores were reluctant to purchase the product with such a short ‘best before date’ and the candy company was tasked with figuring out how to move the chocolate bars without discarding over 130,000 of them.

The media attention and social media explosion of this story gave a solution to their problem, and they were able to find “homes” for all the bars.

I hope Crystal and her husband continue to bring back these nostalgic treats. My request - bring back the Caramac!

(Author’s note and fun fact: Crystal attended Western Christian College at North Weyburn in the 1980s.)
