Description
Northern Marsh Orchid
A lovely plant this is the more northerly equivalent of Dactylorhiza praetermissa. It has a delightful stocky dwarf habit with deep blue-tinged, green leaves usually without any spotting, but rarely with a few diffuse spots, and compact crowded flower spikes of deep rich violet-purple flowers.
The individual blooms are deeply coloured and have a very characteristic diamond shaped lip. The shape results from the folding of the central lobe, and once ‘learned’ it is a sure guide to the identification of this species.
Garden soil, damp but well-drained. Cultivated stock.
