A beautiful, small terrestrial orchid with compact, thick stems that produces thick, leathery leaves and long, upright inflorescences with orange to red flowers. Epidendrum secundum is widespread in a variety of humid, open habitats throughout tropical South America. It is usually found at higher elevations to 3000 m but occasionally also grows in lowland habitats. This form is found above 2600 m in paramo vegetation in Boyacá, Colombia.
