An impressive, tall growing (up to 20 m (60 ft.)), pinnate palm that is widespread in the northern half of South America. Like so many others in the genus, Attalea maripa, or "Maximiliana maripa" as it used to be called, is perfect for the large park or garden where its size can be seen to its full advantage. As many as 25 huge, plumose leaves form an ascending crown, carried on a comparatively slender trunk. While adaptable, the tropics suit it best. The fruits have a thin layer of edible flesh and are occasionally found in markets in tropical South America. Oil can be extracted from the seeds. The edible palm heart is of superior quality.
