Found in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador near Quito, Peru and Bolivia at elevations around 1850 to 2250 meters as a medium sized, cool to cold growing epiphyte or terrestrial with ovate or elliptic-ovate, laterally compressed, ancipitous pseudobulbs carrying lanceolate, acute, narrowing below into a conduplicate, slightly petiolate base leaves that blooms in the fall, winter and spring on an axillary, 21" [51 cm] long, apically fractiflex, paniculate, shortly branched, widely spaced, each branch 2 flowered, 2 to 2.4" [5 to 6 cm] between each flower, to 12 flowered, inflorescence arising on a mature pseudobulb with a few widely spaced, branches and carrying many widely spaced 2 to 2.4" [5 to 6 cm] flowers.

Distinguished from others by the wiry inflorescence with conspicuous, rounded spathaceous floral bracts and smallish yellow and brown flowers with a stout column usually equipped with minute erect apical auricles. The closest relatives would be C midas which has whitish flowers and C williamsianum which has pinkish flowers.
