Coffee Agronomist (PT/seasonal) The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew has a vibrant and diverse crop research portfolio, which includes world-class research on coffee. We are seeking applications for a two-year part time position to work as part of an international team on improving and understanding climate resiliency and profitability of coffee farms in Ethiopia. The researcher will implement and examine farm interventions, including soil improvements, mulching, and shade management, to better understand climate adaptation potential and agronomic improvement. The project aims to collect substantial amounts of agronomy, climate and economic data, which the researcher will be required to collate, archive, and analyze. https://lnkd.in/eaZeSCeR

Despite its success, the Ugandan coffee sector faces major challenges, which are set to accelerate over the coming decades, due to climate change and other disruptive influences. Uganda is fortunate, however, in possessing key wild (indigenous) coffee genetic resources, which offer promise for coffee crop development, climate-resilience and commercial enrichment. Effective conservation measures are required to safeguard these key resources, and the natural forests in which they occur. Our new paper also provides new information on excelsa and eugenioides coffee.

New research article just out on Liberica and excelsa coffee The re-emergence of Liberica coffee as a major crop plant The failure of Liberica coffee as a global crop plant by the turn of the twentieth century was due to a number of factors, including the material used for global dissemination -- the Liberica selected for introduction and upscaling in the 1870s was either a poor choice or a matter of unfortunate circumstance. Renewed interest in this species, particularly in the excelsa variant, is evident across the coffee supply chain. In a warming world, and in an era beset with supply chain disruption, Liberica coffee could re-emerge as a major crop plant. https://lnkd.in/eG8DUR_Q #supplychain #coffee
