Mount Spurgeon black kauri pine
Found only in this country, the genus has just nine species. The distribution is rare with plants only found growing naturally on the granite-derived soils of Mount Spurgeon and Mount Lewis in Queensland at elevations of 1000-1200 m. Seen here in a botanic garden, Prumnopitys ladei has been included in the Rare or Threatened Australian Plants (ROTAP) list, only occurring naturally in an even smaller localised area called Atherton Tablelands, south of Mount Spurgeon.
Growing to a height of 10 m. Foliage is glossy-green, stiff and fern-like with leaves approximately 2 cm in length and borne in two rows along the horizontal stems. Male and female cones are borne on separate plants.
''Prumnopitys ladei'', also known as Mount Spurgeon black pine, is a species of conifer in the family Podocarpaceae. It is found only in Australia.
