Former Ulster Unionist MLA Jo-Anne Dobson and her son Mark were recovering last night after she donated one of her kidneys to him.

Mrs Dobson had surgery to remove the kidney yesterday morning.

Mr Dobson (24) was given the kidney yesterday afternoon. He had been on dialysis since August after a previous transplant failed.

Mr Dobson has suffered from kidney problems since he was a baby. He was given a kidney from a deceased donor in 2009.

But last January doctors discovered that it was failing and had to be removed.

On Monday night, Mrs Dobson tweeted: "In the morning Mark & I place our lives in the hands of a hero! An emotional night for us at Belfast City Hospital until a new day dawns & Mark receives new life from me for a 2nd time as I donate a kidney to him."

Politicians including Ulster Unionist leader Robin Swann and TUV leader Jim Allister wished the pair a speedy recovery,
