Much like wearing florals, a lighter hair color for spring isn't exactly groundbreaking. This is why we love the idea of going with a blackberry hair hue. The cool, dark purple shade is an unexpected departure from the typical spring hair color trends.

If you have the urge to dramatically change your look for a new season, blackberry hair might be the answer. Hairstylist Megan Schipani gave one of her clients the most vivid blackberry shades we've seen yet, photographed above.

We sought the help of Schipani and Tina Outen to get tips for creating the look and maintaining the color after dyeing.

Below, they share what to expect if you're interested in making your strands darker.

How to Get Blackberry Hair

Schipani told us that she created the color by using the balayage highlighting technique and only lightened the strands of her client's dark brown base that she was going to cover in purple. The roots were left untouched. Once the stylist shampooed and dried the client's hair, she applied three different purple shades from the L'Anza color line to the client's balayaged strands for dimension.

Hair Care for the Look

The coloring process might give you the impression that blackberry hair is a high-maintenance look, but Schipani said that the balayage grows out beautifully, with no root touch ups necessary.

"I usually send my clients home with a custom-made color conditioner mix to refresh color in-between visits," Schipani said. "Some clients like the way it fades, which is generally a beautiful lavender."

Outen said that when you're washing blackberry hair, you should use a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner that doesn't lather too much, adding that "the bubbles are where all the abrasive oxygen lives, which can strip your tones."

To refresh your tone between colorist appointments, Outen recommended alternating colored conditioners like Bain De Terre Raspberry Plum Color Enhancing Conditioner for Plum Tone or L'Oréal Colourista in Burgundy or Purple.

The Bottom Line

A bright hair color that's doesn't require a lot of care is rare. If the striking shade is one you're up for trying for spring, Schipani had some thoughts to share. Although the purple has more of a blackberry vibe when it's applied to a darker base, it would be pretty on any hair color.

"You could also create a darker base, but that would be an entirely different process," Schipani told us.

Outen added, "If you have dark hair, you have a lot of red and orange natural hair pigments, which means you can actually achieve this shade with hair color instead of bleaching, putting less stress on the hair.

"You're just adding a blue pigment, which sits around your own natural red pigments," Outen said. "These pigments are exposed during the coloring process easily, creating a 'blackberry' shade that's vibrant, glossy, and healthy."
