Broadus Richard Littlejohn, Jr.

SPARTANBURG, SC-- Broadus Richard (Dick) Littlejohn, Jr., age 85, died Monday, December 13, 2010, at home.

Born in Spartanburg on December 4, 1925, Mr. Littlejohn was the son of the late Broadus Richard and Evelyn Hicks Littlejohn, Sr. Mr. Littlejohn and his father were original subscribers and served on the Board of Directors with WSPA radio and Channel 7. They were instrumental in organizing the annual Bill Drake Christmas Music Festival.

Mr. Littlejohn was past President of Community Cash Stores and a former board member of the Food Market Institute. He was a former board member with the Piedmont Community Action and the Salvation Army. Mr. Littlejohn served with the Spartanburg Sertoma Club and in 1968 he received the Sertoma Distinguished Service to Mankind Award. Mr. Littlejohn was a former member of the Kiwanis Club and American Camelia Society. He created the Margaret and Dick Littlejohn Foundation to preserve his collection of historical materials which is available to scholars and known as the Littlejohn Collection at the Wofford College Library. He was a life Trustee of Converse College, founding trustee of Charleston Southern University, trustee of North Greenville College, and member of the advisory board of Furman University. Mr. Littlejohn honorably served his country in the United States Navy in World War II and was a graduate of the Citadel.

Mr. Littlejohn was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school for 13 year old boys for most of the last 60 years, and dedicated his life to young people and youth evangelism. Mr. Littlejohn received the Heart of a Servant award for his service to Youth Ministry. He was very supportive of the annual Kentucky Mission trip traveling with the mission team until his declining health prevented his travels.

While serving on the Board of Directors of the Food Marketing Institute, Mr. Littlejohn traveled with World Vision to Kenya, Senegal, Ceylon, Ivory Coast, and Ethiopia. From these missions he helped create FICAH (Food Industry Crusade Against Hunger).

In 1980, he and his son, Rick, traveled to Chengdu, China. Later, Mr. Littlejohn accompanied by his wife, traveled to China with the Southern Baptist Countrymen singing group and was entertained in the Great Hall of People. Following additional trips to China with the Citadel, he and Mrs. Littlejohn hosted a banquet at the United States Capitol and returned the hospitality shown to them in Beijing.

Mr. Littlejohn is survived by his beloved wife, Margaret Poole Littlejohn of 54 years; a daughter, Anne Littlejohn Gowan and her husband Tim of Roebuck and their daughter, Ansley Gowan; a son, Broadus Richard Littlejohn, III and his wife, Lizabeth Wolfson Littlejohn of Moscow, ID and their children, Hope Eifert and her husband Ellis, Brad Littlejohn and his wife, Rachel; Julie, Matthew and Emily Littlejohn; and two great-grandchildren, Soren Littlejohn and Broadus Eifert.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to the caregivers from Loving Care, who did so much to help Mr. Littlejohn during his final years.

The family will welcome friends Sunday, December 19, 2010, from 2:00-4:00 PM at The J.M. Dunbar Funeral Home.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, December 20, 2010, at 2:00 PM in the Sanctuary at First Baptist Church, Spartanburg conducted by Reverend Dr. Don Wilton, Reverend Seth Buckley, and Reverend Sal Barone.

Pallbearers will be William B. Littlejohn, Jr., W. Jamison Cox, W. Bradford Littlejohn, Dr. William D. Stewart, Dr. Keith Cox, Jeffery L. Kelly, Matthew B. Littlejohn, and Patrick Wilson.

Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

The family will be at the home.
