Smugglers Path down cliffs of the White Nothe headland
The name "White Nothe" literally means "White Nose", which is how the chalk headland once appeared. Much of it has greened over during the past century as no major landslips have occurred. The upper parts of this path zig-zag back and forth across the 'nose' of White Nothe and is not recommended for anyone who doesn't have a head for heights. The path is reputed to be the one in the novel Moonfleet by J. Meade Falkner. For more details see Ian West's internet field guide to the Geology of the Wessex Coast.
