"Grower Jan Klusmann: "We cannot meet the demand"

Promenaea Sunlight: Very popular but a challenge to propagate

The orchid is a popular and well-known plant in Europe and over the last few years, new colors and shapes successfully entered the market. An example of a successfully introduced new orchid is the Promenaea Sunlight. "The popularity and demand for this species is increasing every year. At the moment, the demand is so high that we cannot meet it. The main reason is the difficult and long propagation process," says Jan Klusmann of Klusmann Blumenvertrieb GmbH, grower of this award winning Promenaea Sunlight.

Promenaea Sunlight
The Promenaea Sunlight is a cross between the Promenaea limelight and the Promenaea xanthina and is being propagated by Hassinger-Orchideen and grown by Klusmann. These yellow with brown spots flowered orchids are available in three pot sizes; 6cm, 9cm and 12cm. The 6cm plants, which has 8+ flowers, the 9cm plant, which has 15+ and 30+ and the 12cm, which has 30+ flowers, all bloom for 6-8 weeks. At last year's IPM Essen, this new species won the Innovation Awards 2014 in the category Flowering Indoor Plants.

High demand
"It is always a gamble when introducing a new product to the market, but together with Hassinger-Orchideen we not only highly invested in the quality of the orchid itself, we also did a lot of market research and sales tests in order to ensure a proper demand," says Jan Klusmann of Klusmann. So, after years of testing, they decided to introduce this new species to the European market and started up marketing activities. "We started with small numbers and soon afterwards, we had to increase our production volumes as the demand for this product increased very fast. Now, we are in a luxury position as we cannot meet the demand anymore," says Klusmann.

Challenge to meet demand
Even though Klusmann has been doubling its production volume for some years now, it is still a challenge to meet the demand. According to Klusmann, the main reason for not being able to meet the demand is the difficult and long propagation process. "Not only was developing the desired orchid that was ready for the European market, a difficult and time-consuming process, also the propagation itself takes time. Last year, we doubled the production volume to 40,000 plants and we are planning to double this amount again this next year," says Klusmann.

New colors
Next to increasing the amount of plants, Klusmann and Hassinger-Orchideen are planning to introduce new colors in the future. "We are currently testing orange and brown flower varieties, which we will introduce when we are completely satisfied with their performance," says Klusmann.

NEON Group
Klusmann is part of NEON Group. In this cooperation, 6 orchid producers exchange know-how and ideas about orchid production. Since the establishment of NEON, Hassinger Orchideen specialized in breeding and producing of young plants and Klusmann in finishing the plants.

At the IPM Essen, which will be held from January 26 till January 29, Klusmann and Hassinger-Orchideen will showcase their Promenaea Sunlight together with other orchid varieties and the other companies of the NEON Group.
