Organic Turmeric Curcuma Longa Rhizomes live plant start flower medicinal spice food. Food Medicine Ornamental Dye Plant.
Picture is of a bunch of rhizomes, similar to the ones you will get. they are grown on my organic farm. You will get a finger rhizome with at least 2 eyes. Each eye becomes a sprout.
The finger rhizomes are about 2-4 inches long and have at least two viable eyes (buds from which a plant will grow).
The crown rhizomes are shaped different than the fingers (cone shaped), have at least one developed eye, and produce just the same as fingers, if not better.
With its beautiful white flower, turmeric is easy to grow anywhere the ground doesnt freeze, and elsewhere it does well in containers and can be stored in a cool place for the winter. Here in zone 8 it dies back in winter and returns in spring from the rhizomes which survive in the ground. They will over winter with mulch to zone 7 but die back in winter and return from the rhizomes in spring. but mine are climatized to grow here and do fine. It multiplies well with little care.
Plant twice the depth of the root in well-draining soil. It is a tropical plant and loves sunlight and warmth.
These fresh rhizomes can be planted or eaten. to eat, scrape off skin with small spoon and use in any recipe. They are grown in my organic garden. Just had some salad dressing made with it. Last week we had ice cream.
Turmeric has a peppery, warm and bitter flavor and a mild fragrance slightly reminiscent of orange and ginger, and while it is best known as one of the ingredients used to make curry. Recipes are available online and we have been eating them for the health benefits and the yummy flavor.
Turmeric comes from the root of the Curcuma longa plant and has orange flesh. Turmeric has long been used as a powerful anti-inflammatory in both the Chinese and Indian systems of medicine. Turmeric has been used throughout history as a condiment, healing remedy and textile dye.
Health Benefits are numerous and may be found online.
How Turmeric Lowers Cholesterol
Tumeric's cholesterol-lowering effects are the result of the curry spice's active constituent, curcumin, which research reveals is a messaging molecule that communicates with genes in liver cells, directing them to increase the production of mRNA (messenger proteins) that direct the creation of receptors for LDL (bad) cholesterol. With more LDL-receptors, liver cells are able to clear more LDL-cholesterol from the body.LDL-receptor mRNA increased sevenfold in liver cells treated with curcumin at a concentration of 10 microM, compared to untreated cells. (Liver cells were found to tolerate curcumin at levels of up to 12. microM for 24 hours). (Peschel D, Koerting R, et al. J Nutr Biochem)
Guaranteed to arrive in good condition.
The leaves have been trimmed off or haven't sprouted yet.
Why I sell rhizomes (underground tubers from which plants are propagated)
instead of plants with green growth and leaves.
Ginger grown from rhizomes establishes plants quicker than if small plants are transplanted. The energy in a nice fresh rhizome will make a bigger plant faster than if you buy a little plant in a 4" pot because the rhizome already IS a big plant (it just hasnt yet put out top growth).
Rhizomes divisions dont suffer transplant stress like plants with leaves do.
