Lilium sargentiae  

Description

A wonderful lily originating from an area of Sichuan that is very hot in summer but where the winters are long and cold. Emerging from a large scaly bulb with stout purplish stems to 1.6m tall carrying scattered lanceolate leaves to 12cm long with advantageous bulbils in the upper axils. The raceme of large strongly scented white trumpet flowers are borne in July to August, which may be as many as 18, purple-rose on the outside while the tips of the tepals recurve. Best grown in a hot sunny position in a fertile acid-neutral soil that is well drained.
