Description
A very rare, highly ornamental and much sought after palm that grows in a remote valley near Houailou on New Caledonia's east coast.
It has a yellow-green crownshaft and salmon-red emergent, stiffly recurved and strongly keeled leaves with very thick, leathery, green, sometimes bluish green leaflets. It "was" widely accepted that this was a 'variant' of Chambeyronia macrocarpa with the same spectacular, coloured new leaf, houailouensis however, produces salmon red or bright pink new leaves as shown in the photos.
Chambeyronia houailouensis has now been classified as a separate species to macrocarpa since 2021. These exotic and rare, cool hardy palms look best with full sun to light shade and are able to take light frosts.
If you want something truly unique to add to your garden, this is the perfect addition.
