Lyme Grass
COMMON NAME | Lyme Grass, Dune Grass |
BOTANICAL NAME * | Leymus arenarius |
ZONE | 4-10 |
SIZE | Can grow to 3’ tall, but due to arching of foliage, usually only appears to be 1-2’ tall. |
FOLIAGE | The blue foliage cultivars are the most notable. Foliage turns tan in the fall when the plant goes dormant, and frequently collapses. Foliage can be cut back after it goes dormant in the fall, up until the new foliage appears in late March. |
FLOWER | Tan, rye type inflorescence appearing above the foliage in summer. A very nice compliment to the blue foliage. |
GROWING CONDITIONS | Adaptable to many soil types. Prefers Sand Dunes. Full Sun to Light Shade. Very invasive due to rhizomatous habit. Plant in a space surrounded by a root barrier to help keep it under control. |
FAVORITE CULTIVARS | ‘Blue Dune’ – my favorite blue form. |
NOTES | Deer resistant. Best when in a mass surrounded by root barrier. |
