A new species, Begonia arunachalensis D.Borah & Wahlsteen (Begoniaceae) is described and illustrated. It is distributed in Papum Pare District of Arunachal Pradesh where it grows near streams in rock crevices. Begonia arunachalensis is similar to B. brevicaulis A.DC. but differs in its pendent fruits, number of locules and capsule wings, and longer lateral wings. It belongs to Begonia sect. Diploclinium.

One New Species and Four New Records of Begonia (Begoniaceae) from BhutanBegonia menchunaensis P.Gyeltshen & M.Hughes is described from the cool broadleaved forest of Punakha District in Bhutan. It is assigned to Begonia sect. Diploclinium because it has a tuberous habit and bifid placentae, and is allied to B. picta. Based on its restricted distribution, Begonia menchunaensis is assessed as Critically Endangered under the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria. Begonia picta, B. rex, B. roxburghii and B. xanthina are reported as new records for Bhutan.

A new species of Begonia sect. Diploclinium, Begonia bhutanensis, from Bhutan2021 •
Begonia giganticaulis, a huge new species in Begonia sect. Platycentrum of Begoniaceae from southern Xizang (Tibet) of China, is described. Morphologically, it is mostly similar to B. longifolia and B. acetosella, but clearly differs from the former mainly by its dioecious and taller plants, sparse hairs on abaxial veins, longer inflorescence, unique shape of fruits, and differs from the latter mainly by its late and longer flowering time, 6-tepals of female flower and 3-loculed ovary. The phylogenetic analyses also support the separation of the new species from other taxa. Based on the current data, its conservation status is assigned to Endangered (B2a) according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria.

Begonia yenyeniae (Begoniaceae), a new species from Endau Rompin National Park, Johor, MalaysiaBegoniayenyeniae is a new species of horticultural value known only from the Endau Rompin National Park, Peninsular Malaysia. It is similar to Begoniarajah with which it had previously been confused in the number of tepals and leaf characters. The new species is compared with three similar species, B.foxworthyi, B.rajah and B.reginula and photographs of all four species and descriptions of B.yenyeniae and B.rajah are provided. Molecular analysis using the ndhF-rpl132 chloroplast marker confirms the four species as distinct. Amongst native species, the three variegated species, B.yenyeniae, B.rajah and B.reginula, are some of the most popular Malaysian begonias in cultivation. Based on its restricted distribution, Begoniayenyeniae, under the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria, is assessed as Critically Endangered.

Since 2016, KIB (Kunming Institute of Botany) and CPC (Centre for Plant Conservation of Vietnam) have conducted several surveys in the transboundary karst regions in Northern Vietnam and Southern China and seven new species in the genus Begonia Linn. (Begoniaceae) are firstly described. Amongst them, two species, Begonia albopunctata Y.M. Shui, W.H. Chen & H.Q. Nguyen and B. erectocarpa H.Q. Nguyen, Y.M. Shui & W.H. Chen, respectively belong to section Sphenanthera with berry fruits and section Leprosae with clavate berry fruits; four species, B. gulongshanensis Y.M. Shui & W. H. Chen, B. minissima H.Q. Nguyen, Y.M. Shui & W.H. Chen, B. mollissima Y.M. Shui, H.Q. Nguyen & W.H. Chen, B. rhytidophylla Y.M. Shui & W.H. Chen, belong to section Coelocentrum with parietal placentation; one species, Begonia bambusetorum H.Q. Nguyen, Y.M. Shui & W.H. Chen, belongs to section Diploclinium with 3-loculed ovary and capsules. The diagnostic characters of these species are described and illustra...

Rac1/p21-activated kinase pathway controls RB phosphorylation and E2F transcription factor activation in B-lymphocytes2015 •
Small GTPases of the Ras superfamily are capable of activating E2F-dependent transcription leading to cell proliferation, however, the molecular mechanisms are poorly understood. In this study, using immortalized chicken DT40 B cell lines to investigate the role of Vav/Rac signalling cascade on B cell proliferation, it is shown that the proliferative response triggered by BCR activation is dramatically reduced in the absence of Vav3 expression. Analysis of this proliferative defect shows that in the absence of Vav3 expression, RB phosphorylation and the subsequent E2F activation do not take place. By combining pharmacological and genetic approaches, PI3K and PLCγ2 were identified as the key regulatory signalling molecules upstream of Vav3/Rac pathway leading to RB phosphorylation and E2F transcription factor activation. Additionally, vav3(-/-) and plcγ2(-/-) DT40 B cells were not able to activate the RB/E2F complex wild-type phenotype when these genetically modified cells were trans...

A novel application of silicon microstrip technology for energy-dispersive EXAFS studies2000 •
A prototype X-ray detector for energy-dispersive EXAFS has been developed and tested to demonstrate the principle of using silicon microstrip detector technology for this application. Testing took place at the UK Synchrotron Radiation Source, where the absorption spectra of a 5 microm Ni foil and a 25 mM NiCl(2) solution were obtained.

The Role of Cognitive Skills and Their Use at Work in Explaining the Immigrant-Native Wage Gap2017 •
This paper analyses the immigrant-native wage gap and incorporates cognitive skills to approximate an individual human capital profile. Based on data from the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) for 15 European countries, we document that on average foreign-born respondents achieve substantially worse scores in literacy and numeracy test domain, and the observed gap in cognitive skill declines over the period of the host-country stay. The results of the analysis show that once we account additionally skill use at work in wage regressions, along with actual skill level, no statistically significant gap in earnings across immigrants and natives remains. These findings indicate that, despite similar cognitive skill levels and background traits, immigrants and natives may apply their skills at work to different extents, yielding a difference in their wage returns. Therefore, disparity in skill use at work plays an important role in explaining the imm...
