A study on leaf anatomy was conducted on 68 species belonging to four genera (Shorea Roxb., Hopea Roxb., Parashorea Kurz. and Neobalanocarpus King) in the tribe Shoreae. In this study, 33 species of Hopea, 26 species of Shorea, eight species of Parashorea, and a monotypic genus Neobalanocarpus with one species N. heimii were examined. Samples used were fresh and herbarium specimens, fresh samples were collected from various forest reserves in Peninsular Malaysia. The herbarium specimens were collected from Royal Botanic Gardens Kew Herbarium (RBG), United Kingdom and Forest Research Institute of Malaysia Herbarium (KEP). Focused was given to foliar anatomical characteristics in the midribs, leaf lamina and margin. The investigation presented in this study aims to prove that selected characters of leaf anatomy have taxonomic value (systematic and diagnostic) in four selected genera (Shorea, Hopea, Parashorea and Neobalanocarpus) of the tribe Shoreae of Malaysian Dipterocarpaceae. Methods used in this study are cross-sections using sliding microtome, staining using Safranin and Alcian Blue, mounting sections on glass slides and observation under light microscope. Anatomical studies have demonstrated the taxonomic value of leaf lamina anatomy. The presence of sclerenchyma completely or partly surrounding the primary and secondary vascular bundles in the lamina, parenchyma cells completely encircling or confined to the flanks of the vascular bundles in primary or primary vascular bundles in the lamina, sclerenchyma cells (sclereids or fibres) scattered around the peripheral vascular bundles and phloem sclerenchyma in the vascular bundle system in the midribs, druses and solitary crystals, phloem sclerenchyma in the midrib vascular bundles and sclerenchyma cells either completely or incompletely ensheathing the midrib vascular bundles are common in all Dipterocarpaceae species and definitely of taxonomic value. The outline of the margin is very useful for differentiating species. The relative prominence of the midrib and primary veins, the type of primary vascular bundle and the girder type and outline can be used to delimit taxa at lower generic levels (sections and subsections). The number of resin canals in the primary vascular bundles in the lamina can be used in the delimitation at generic level. The presence of and silica sand (granules) could be very useful in distinguishing some species and be used in the identification of a few species. The study showed that leaf anatomical characters have value in classification of the species of Dipterocarpaceae studied and correspond in most parts with Ashton’s classification.
