English Sterling Silver & M of P Victorian Fruit Knife Hallmark:-Sheffield 1834

About the Item

English sterling silver - a large FRUIT KNIFE, made in 1834 Full English hallmarks for Sheffield 1834 The maker's mark is SK, which is probably Samuel Kirkby. I have had `00s of fruit knives over the last 45 years, but this is the first time I have come across this maker. A beautiful knife which has not been used. See the leaf and bead pattern along both sides of the blade. The mother of pearl facing on the front side has a silver cartouche in the centre, engraved with the initials - M L. To the left is a flower with two flower heads that look just like foxgloves, to the right is a swimming swan in front of a bulrush. The back is decorated with two starbursts with a leafy branch between. The spring along the back edge of the knife has a silver casing with an engine turned pattern - see picture 6. The knife opens and closes perfectly, snapping in all three positions - closed, half open and fully open, exactly as it would have done when it was made, 188 years ago. Comes with its own leather purse, with a double ball clip fastener. Open length:- 141 millimetres / 5.55 inches. Closed length:- 79 mms. / 3.11 ins. Weight:- 19.8 grams / 0.64 ounces.
