Marirana is a fastgrowing vergreen tree with a broad, frondose crown; it can grow 10 - 20 metres tall, belongs to is a genus of flowering plants in the family Chrysobalanaceae. It prefers a sunny position for better growth. Couepia is native to Mesoamerica and South America. The edible fruit is often gathered from the wild for local use, with the fruit being sold in local markets. The tree is also often cultivated in Amazonia, both for its fruit and because it provides an excellent shade. The yellow-green fruit is about 8cm long and 6 cm wide, containing a single, large seed. It is normally eaten raw, it has a sweet, fleshy, fibreless pulp and the fruit is rich in in carotenoids.
