The freshwater mangrove can be found far inland, beside freshwater loogons or river systems across the far north of Australia. At various times during the year Barringtonia acutangula produces beautiful bri
ght red flowers. The green fruits are not edible and the sap from this tree can irritate your skin or burn your eyes!
Aboriginal people used the roots, bark and leaves for fish poison. The pounded mix was released into small waterways and soon after the stunned fish rose to the water’s surface and were caught by hand.
Remember not to drink this water as itremains toxic until further rains flush it out!
