They're light green or glaucescent on the underside, and dark green on the top. The tree produces female inflorescences that are 1-2cm long and subglobose or oblong in shape. The nutlets are broadly ovate, around 3mm long, and have papery wings that are 1/4 as wide as the nutlet. Alnus hirsuta typically blooms from May to July and produces fruit from July to August.
