Conwy Castle – opening times, postcode and information guide

There is much to see and do in Conwy, but if you only do one thing, make sure you visit Conwy Castle. Few towns can lay claim to their own castle dating from the 13th century, but this one can – and it has plenty of stories to share.

Where is Conwy Castle?

This highly rated fortress is hard to miss on Rose Hill Street, as it overlooks the River Conwy next to Conwy Road, which spans the river.

If visiting by car, you’ll need the postcode LL32 8AY for your satnav. Visitors can also easily reach the castle via train, by alighting at the nearby railway station and walking for around four minutes to get to the entrance. You can also use Llandudno Junction, which is just over 1.5 miles away.

When is it open?

Opening times vary depending on the season. From 1st March until 31st October, the castle opens at 9.30am daily. From 1st November to the end of February, opening times are later, at 10am from Monday to Saturday and 11am on Sundays.

Closing times are as follows:

• 1st March to 30 June – 5pm
• 1st July to 31st August – 6pm
• 1st September to 31st October – 5pm
• 1st November to 28th February – 4pm (Monday to Sunday)

It is open throughout the year with these exceptions:

• Christmas Eve
• Christmas Day
• Boxing Day
• New Year’s Day

What does the castle offer?

Once you’ve parked up and found your way to the entrance, you’ll disappear into the past as you step inside the castle walls. You may be forgiven for losing yourself in centuries gone by if you make your way up to the battlements, where you can look out over modern day Conwy. It is possible to walk right around the battlements too, so be sure to take your camera for some scenic shots. Conwy can be viewed from this impressive angle, with Snowdonia on the horizon beyond.

Plenty more is waiting for you too, as you go back 700 years to imagine what life would have been like in the royal court in years gone by. The castle was said to have cost £15,000 when it was built.
