Abstract

Trichopyrum is a new genus published by Áskell Löve in 1986 in his article titled “Some taxonomical adjustments in Euroasiatic wheat grasses” in Volume 87, VerÖff. Geobot. Inst. ETH, Stiftung Rubel, Zürich. He published this genus because it contained a unique EESS genomic combination, but did not contain the J genome. Löve considered that it was different from Elytrigia Desv., which contained the E, J, and S genomes. But from the data of present studies, the E and J were just two variants of the same genome (Wang, 1985), and had been renamed the Ee and Eb genomes. Therefore, these two genera should be merged into one genus. Due to the type species Elytrigia, Elytrigia repens (L.) Nevski contained the StStStStHH genomes (Assadi and Renemark, 1995; Vershinin et al., 1994), and it should be classified as Elymus. Therefore, the basis of genus Elytrigia Desv. no longer existed, and lost its legitimacy. Thus, it is legal for Trichopyrum Á. Löve involving species with the EeEeStSt, EeEeEeEeStSt, and EbEbEeEeStSt genomes.
