Abstract

Tubers of Satyrium were regarded as aphrodisiacs by Greek medicine and a hint of such usage is present in the two Satyrium species used in Chinese and Indian medicine. Satyrium nepalense var. ciliatum is also used to treat chronic nephritis and heart failure in China whereas Satyrium nepalense var. nepalense is used in India for malaria an dysentery. Spathoglottis are popular garden flowers in the tropics. Seeds of Spathoglottis plicata are used to promote a fair complexion for Javanese lasses. Four species have medicinal usage in Southeast Asia. Twelve Chinese herbal prescriptions on the use of Spiranthes sinensis are described. Plant contains numerous dihydrophenanthrenes and their derivatives. The chapter additionally discusses Smitinandia, Steveniella and Sunipia.
