Lowlands and minor mountain ranges The Llanura de Los Guatusos, where few protected areas exist, has been heavily degraded by agricultural and lumbering activities, but even so, it accounts for a number of new records of great interest for the country, such as Acoelorraphe wrightii, Christiana africana, Hirtella guatemalensis, Inga capitata, Miconia chamissois, M. tomentosa, Solanum ipomoea, Tetrapterys mucronata, and Zygia conzattii. A few of these species give a hint of the relationship between this area and the Caribbean slope of northern Central America. Among the new species that have been found here are Gamanthera herrerae*, Inga canonegrensis*, and Sclerolobium costaricense. The Llanuras de San Carlos and Sarapiqui have also been modified by human activity, but their combination of flatlands and hills harbors a diverse flora that has contributed considerably to our list of new discoveries. A few of these are Caryodendron angustifolium, Cayaponia sessiliflora, Chorigyne cylindrica, Conchocarpus nicaraguensis, Doliocarpus dasyanthus, D. foreroi, Elvasia elvasioides, Henriettella odorata, Ipomoea eremnobrocha, Licania affinis, Malanea erecta, Miconia sparrei, Pouteria
