PRESENTATION The International exhibition entitled Worldwide Botanical Art Exhibition – Linking People to Plants Trough Contemporary Botanical Art (in Portuguese, for short, Expomundial Brasil), was idealized by the American Society for Botanical Artists (ASBA). The society was founded by Diane Bouchier in 1994 and currently has more than 1700 individual members and 40 Institutional members around the world. ASBA is a non-profit association and has as its main aim to provide a thriving and interactive community dedicated to perpetuate the tradition and the contemporary practice of botanical art. This exhibition was assembled in 25 countries, with May 18th, 2018 chosen as the International Day of Botanical Art. The preparations for the exhibition in Brazil began to be discussed in mid-2015 and great efforts were made by the organizers of Curitiba and Rio de Janeiro for the event to happen. The theme presented to all countries was "Native Plants". Each country counted on its own body of jurors which, in our case, had the difficult task of choosing 60 artworks between 143 proposals submitted by 65 Brazilian artists. It was also necessary to choose, among the selected artworks, the 40 most representative illustrations to be part of a video that brought together all the participating countries, which was presented in all the World exhibitions simultaneously. In Brazil, the Expomundial was assembled in the exhibition hall of the Curitiba Municipal Botanical Museum, located in the city’s Botanical Garden and was curated by the Centro de Ilustração Botânica do Paraná – CIBP (Center of Botanical Illustration of Paraná).

8

During the exhibition, a lot of workshops, demonstrations, lectures and roundtables took place. The video showing artwork of all participating countries has been continuously exhibited. Participation was open to all Brazilian botanical illustrators, residents or not. Each participant had the right to participate only in one exhibition, even if he is Brazilian but lives abroad. The jurors' body was composed of renowned Brazilian artists and botanists: Andrea Costa, Dulce Nascimento, Cristina Maria Klas, Marcos Antônio dos Santos Silva-Ferraz, Miriam Kaelher, Paulo Labiak e Rosane Quintela.

The theme of the exhibition referred to native botanical species of Brazil, including natural hybrids, but excluding any man-made hybrid or naturalized exotic plants. The artworks presented should necessarily be the originals, bidimensional, using the techniques of graphite, watercolor, fountain pen or acrylic. No photographs, digital works, or tridimensional works were accepted. Each artist could enroll up to 3 artworks. The organizing committees worked at ASBA's invitation, as volunteers. The Brazilian committee was composed by the illustrators: Diana Carneiro dianacarneiro@netpar.com.br Fatima Zagonel fatima@zagonel.net Mônica Claro monicaclaro@globo.com Maria Alice de Rezende malicerezende@yahoo.com.br
