MADAGASCAR 165 million years ago, Madagascar already showed its uniqueness and originality by breaking away from the African continent to land 40 million years later, somewhere in the Tropic of Capricorn, in the shadow of the African continent with which it has so little in common. This island continent is known for its rich biodiversity: The luxurious tropical forest in the East, the desert like aridity in the South, the vast Savannahs in the West, the lush rice fields and terraces of the central highlands and its volcanic

region and the turquoise lagoons in the North. The variety of climates, vegetation, landscapes, ways of life, habitats and traditions. The incredible melting pot of Asians, Arabs, Africans and the Europeans gave the island continent its personality and its biodiversity. The evolution of the living species of the Grande Ile or literally: “Great Island” has followed a different path from that of the neighboring continents. This enables every traveler to be submerged in a particularly unique flora and fauna, endemic to Madagascar.

MADAGASCAR

THE COUNTRY Location Madagascar lies in the Indian Ocean, 400 km off the African coast from which it is separated by the Mozambique Channel. Réunion Island is 700 km East and Mauritius at 900 km. Surface Area 587 000 km². Length from north to south is 1500 km and width from east to west is 500 km. Population 27 million according to estimates made in 2019. Density 42 inhabitants per square kilometer.

WEATHER Not far from the equator, Madagascar has both dry and rainy seasons. The rainy season runs from mid-December to mid-March with the probability of tropical storms to cyclones, thus not the best season to travel, but it remains possible to visit some regions. The months of April to June after the rainy season are good for travel with a pleasant and mild climate. The country is lush and green after the rainy season. July and August are the southern winter months and can be cool in the mornings in the highlands. September to mid-December are ideal for traveling around the country. In summary: April to November is the best time to visit Madagascar.

MADAGASCAR HIGHLIGHTS

PEOPLE & CULTURE

COMORES MOZAMBIQUE

The Malagasy, who are they? The Malagasy has a complex origin. Before the African, Arab and European settlers, Madagascar was first inhabited by the Austronesians, some twenty-five centuries ago. Subsequently, Indonesian (Malacca) and Bantu immigrants from the subequatorial Africa integrated with these Proto Malagasy. The dissemination of a small population in this vast space led to the formation of demographic isolates and assimilated to “tribes’’. The Betsileo and the Merina live in the highlands. The Sakalava and the Mahafaly dominate the plains of the west and southwest; the Antaimoro, Antaisaka, and Tanala populate the coast and forest of the southeast, while the Betsimisaraka dominate the eastern coast. The north of Madagascar is mainly populated by the Tsimihety and the Antakarana. The Antandroy and the Bara rule the semi-arid regions of the south.

I

NATIONAL PARKS There are currently 43 protected areas managed by Madagascar National Parks. Most are on land but many are marine reserves. Some reserves are classified as “Integral Natural Reserves” and are only open to researchers and scientists.

AMAZING WILDLIFE Approximately 95 percent of Madagascar’s reptiles, 89 percent of its plant life, and 92 percent of its mammals exist nowhere else on Earth. And of course, the lemurs remain emblematic animals of the island and they are present in all the parks. Madagascar is also a haven for bird lovers as the island is home to some astonishing 120 endemic species of birds. Add to these are butterflies, insects, chameleons, the very rare predator Fosa, and the nocturnal and very peculiar Aye-aye.

THE COAST AND THE ISLANDS Madagascar has 5000 km of coastline, the majority of which is beach and most of which is deserted and isolated. To take advantage of these superb sites, it will be necessary to go to Nosy Be and its surrounding archipelagos, or to the small island of Ste Marie on the East coast or to the superb lagoon of the south-west in the region of Tulear. Numerous scubadiving and snorkeling spots can be found along the coast.

INCREDIBLE BOTANY There are more than 1,000 varieties of orchids and succulents which stand out in the arid south of Madagascar. Several national parks and rainforests boast of endemic flaura species found all over the country.

Day 7 & 8 Ranomafana National Park We return to our vehicles and head back to the main road. We drive to Ranomafana where we stay in a hotel for two nights. Full day visit of Ranomafana Park in search of lemurs, gecko, chameleons, and birds. Take a leisurely walk through the village. Evening at the hotel (B-L-D)

Day 9 Fianarantsoa - Andringitra Departure from Ranomafana to Fianarantsoa. Shopping at the market for our next hike. We pass by Ambalavao and take a rugged track to reach the village of our porters at the foot of the mountain. The landscape is superb! Night in a campsite. (B-L-D)

Day 10, 11 & 12 Andringitra National Park We go to the waterfalls, the „alien“ site, the base camp. The walk is not difficult and the views towards the Tsaranoro valley and the big cliffs are wonderful. With an altitude of 2,658 meters, Pic Boby is the highest point in the south of the country and is the second highest peak in Madagascar. Recognizable by its enormous granite dome, it is the target of our day‘s ascent. We leave our camp in the early morning to set off and climb the mountain. The difference in altitude is not significant, but the bumpy terrain reminds us that the hike is a sporty exercise. The arrival at the summit in time for the sunrise is an unforgettable moment. Then we hike down back to the camp. Nights in the campsite. (B-L-D)

ORCHIDS OF MADAGASCAR

For the discovery of orchids, two elements are essential: The place and the season. We propose two distinct periods: February to March and October to November

February and March are 30 % for Epiphyte Orchids and 70% for Terrestrial Orchids. We will visit rainforests. The sites included are Angavokely, the park of Perinet and its surrounding reserves, and the edge of the forest of the East in Antoetra. We will also visit the park of Ranomafana in the rainforest.

October and November are 70 % for Epiphyte Orchids and 30% for Terrestrial Orchids. We will visit rainforests and savannah areas. The sites included are Anjozorobe, the park of Perinet and its surrounding reserves, and the park of Ranomafana in the rainforest. Further south, we visit the dry region of Isalo and Zombitse. Please check with the respective Embassy or Consulate of each country that you are travelling to, as many destinations require visas for both Australians and non-Australian passport holders. For more information, log on to www. visalink.com.au. You need to ensure that you have at least 6 months validity on your passport from the date of your departure return. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are aware of any health requirements for your travel destinations. Vaccinations are strongly recommended for certain destinations. You need to contact your local doctor who will advise you of these requirements. Please note that vaccinations may be recommended some period in advance of travelling.

paying adults, generally the hotel will expect the child to share the parent’s bed and will not provide an extra bed. Additional charges may be levied for child meals. Where a child rate is provided in this brochure, an extra roll or fold-away bed is usually provided. Children are charged an adult rate if staying in a room without adults. River Cruises – shore excursions & water levels The nature of some shore excursions in Asia means that for some excursions there are no formal jetties. While staff are always on hand to assist, those with limited mobility may find these areas difficult to access. Due to the unpredictable nature of weather and its effect on river conditions and water levels, it may on occasions be necessary to complete some elements of the itinerary by land, rather than by boat, or to alter the route of the vessel including substituting some planned stops for others. Such changes can occur at any time without prior notice or warning and no refunds will be given in this instance. On the lower Mekong River between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, large seasonal variations in water levels necessitate low-water and high-water itineraries. The only significant difference is a vehicle transfer to/from Siem Reap in place of cruising across Tonle Sap Lake. As a guide, low water itineraries are applied typically from January to early July, but this may vary depending on rainfall across the river catchments.
