As planet Earth ages, our resources are moving closer to the brink of exhaustion. One thing that’s growing at breakneck speed is population. Scientists have time and again warned us about the impending catastrophe that Earth would have to face if the population rises at this rate, but we choose to look the other way.
Watch video:
Among the several times attempts made by others trying to explain us the current population scenario, the one by WorldPopulationHistory.org stands out.
The site has recently released a video showing the population growth over the last 2000 years, i.e. from 1 CE via present times to 2050, in one single map.
Following are some interesting pointers from the video:
#The map starts off with 1CE, the time of the Han invasion of China, when the population was about 170 million.
#The Mongol invasion of China saw its population wiped clean in huge numbers. The Mongol conquests in the early 13th century had killed tens of millions of people at a time when the world population was much smaller — around 360 million.
#The 14th century saw Black Death kill more than 20 million people in Europe — nearly one-third of the continent’s population — and 75 million around the world, when the global population was about 380 million.
#The beginning of the 19th century saw advances in medicine and engineering, and the population reach a billion people.
#From the early 20th century, the population growth touches 2 billion and the increase from hereon is huge. The population explodes close to 10 billion.
