Someone recently recommended i feed marmite to my pony everyday as it can help symptoms of sweet itch and repels midges and flies! I since found out this is due to the B vitamins in marmite. Has anyone else heard of this and has anyone tried it? I have started to feed my pony with it and she loves it, she licks it off a wooden spoon, don't know if it will work but thought it was worth trying.

a friend of mine feeds her horse one marmite sandwich a day starting in early spring and has got rid of a sweet itch problem. Im not suggesting this is a cure for sweet itch but it has certainly helped her.

The product Think Fly is supposed to smell meaty and I wonder if it is actually yeast extract as it can easy be mistaken as meaty. Im told it resembles gravy granules.

My old donkey loved marmite, he would also go mad if you ate twiglets near him! When he was ill, it was all he would eat. I never knew about the fly thing though, might try it on my horse and donkey as they will probably love it. Assuming it does work how much would they need a day to actually make a difference?

mine wouldn't eat it - didn't try sandwich method, but did try putting it on apples Lol--I don't think even I'd eat it on apples! I suspect it's an acquired taste, judging by my parrots--one of them will eat marmite on toast, the other one tried it once, spat it everywhere (including up the curtains ), threw the toast as far as he could, screeched with rage and then waddled off to wash his beak out with water. It's probably a bit too salty to be safe for parrots anyway I don't know how much a horse would need--a healthy teaspoonful on a bit of toast, maybe?

It definately does work - last summer, I fed my two a good dollop of Marmite a day in their feed and also fed them straight Brewer's Yeast, and there were definately less flies bothering them. I did feed a big spoonful though, so it worked out very expensive to give it to the two horses (I used a big jar in about 4-5 days at £4.50ish a jar! ), and it was a bit of a 'faff'....I used to dissolve the Marmite in warm water and then mix it into the feed, cos I found that (a) it wouldn't slide off the spoon unless the spoon was hot (b) it makes a flipping sticky brown mess of everything! (My horses were both 'porkies', so I didn't really want to be feeding them bread every day (in a Marmite sandwich). This year, I only have the one horse, and Ive been trying 'Think Fly', which seems to be working! I suppose it does smell a bit 'meaty', but I guess it's probably yeast based....I would trust a well-known equine nutrition company to not use meat products in a horse supplement! I also still feed the straight Brewer's Yeast. It all seems to be doing the trick - not a single fly bite this year so far! ;D Tracey

Yup - I feed my two a marmite sandwich every day - with A LOT more marmite than a 'normal' marmite sandwich!
I cut it up and put it in their feed, and they love it! I've only been doing it for a couple of weeks, but there do seem to be less flies around them. Problem is, when I ride, the flies congregate around me instead ... and no, I am NOT going to start eating marmite sandwiches too ...

Miranda, I wouldn't feed them loaves and loaves, but a couple of slices a day won't do them any harm. And it is brown bread
