This unique golden sedge was discovered by famous plantsman and garden writer, E.A. Bowles. He found Carex elata ‘Aurea’ in the Norfolk Broad, a wetland waterway in eastern England. It is very well-suited for moist or wet areas, as it thrives in up to three inches of water. This Carex can tolerate slightly drier soils if it is planted in the shade. However, its color is most spectacular when planted in full sun and moist to wet soil similar to its native habitat. The fine-textured leaves of Bowles Golden Sedge are striped sporadically with bright green lines, which will turn lime green when planted in shade. It is magnificent planted in masses around the border of a pond. Carex elata ‘Aurea’can also be used in the landscape as a dramatic specimen plant or in decorative container with other moisture-loving plants.
