Orchid Neottia cordata in the Bavarian Alps

Summary edit

Description
English: Lesser Twayblade or Heartleaf Twayblade Orchid (Neottia cordata) in the Bavarian Alps on the slopes of Alpspitze, Germany. This plant has a circumpolar range, but is rare everywhere; in Ukraine it is listed in the Red Book. Recording of the plant is hampered by its size: the total height of the orchid rarely exceeds 10 cm, and its flowers are 3–4 mm in diameter. The flowers of N. cordata are pollinated mainly by fungus gnats from the Mycetophilidae and Sciaridae families. Mycorrhizal partners of the plant are almost exclusively Ascomycota fungi from the Serendipitaceae family. Such fastidiousness to the choice of symbiotic partners significantly limits the spread of the plant.
