Plants of the Borneo rainforest
At least 15,000 plants, of which 6,000 are found nowhere else in the world, can be found in the swamps, mangroves, and lowland of the island. The Heart of Borneo is home to around 10,000 of these.
This is a picture of a tropical pitcher plant. This plant attracts small bugs such as flies, spiders and ants. Once they get caught in the pitcher plants goo it make it easier for the predator to get their prey.
This is the worlds largest plant. It can reach up to 100cm and weigh up to 10 kilograms. It gives off the smell of rotting flesh nicknamed the corpse flower.
The Borneo is home to many species of orchids. Almost 3000 species. They grow best in 70-90 degrees so be sure to dress light.
Some of the most amazing plants in the Borneo rainforests are the pitchers (Nepenthes species), which have a liquid-filled receptacle that attracts insects. (Different species from the first picture.)
The Thrixspermum Erythrolomum is one of the 51 orchid species discovered on the island of Borneo since 2007. Approximately 3,000 magnificent species of orchid can be found here, more than anywhere else in the world.
