Luculia gratissima: In bloom and amazingly fragrant right now, in mid-winter! Members of the genus Luculia are native to the Himalayan region and Yunnan, China, and are in the madder or coffee family, Rubiaceae. They like the relatively cool summers of the Bay Area and do fine as long as there is no real freezing - ours look good right now, so they must be able to tolerate light freezing with some overhead cover. This plant is a 1954 accession so it has prospered here for over 58 years.
