Common Name The Dark Purple Zygopetalum
Flower Size 2 to 2 1/2" [5 to 6 cm]
Found in Brazil in the Southeast Atlantic forest in Minas Gerais at elevations of 950 to 1800 meters growing on rocks. An easy, small sized, warm to cool growing terrestrial or lithophyte that likes bright light. Plant stays small and blooms in the fall on an erect, several flowered inflorescence with the flowers crowded towards the apex (9") but spreads along short underground rizome. Pseudobulbs are mostly underground. When the flowers first open they smell like fresh ground pepper. As they get older the perfume becomes more spicy floral. This is really the color!
