Bulbophyllum dologlossum

Bulbophyllum dologlossum J.J.Verm., Schuit. & de Vogel, Lankesteriana 20 (2020) 304, fig. 3

Type: Reeve 864 (holo L; iso CANB, E, LAE, K, NSW).

Medium-size epiphyte. Roots spreading. Rhizome creeping, 0.45–0.7 cm diam., new shoot from the basal node of the pseudobulb; rhizome scales thick, weathering to woolly fibres, persistent. Pseudobulbs 0.9–2.2 cm apart, distinct, ovoid-cylindrical, 2.5–7 by 0.8–1.2 cm, hardly angular. Leaf: petiole 1.2–2.2 cm long; blade elliptic(-oblong) to obovate(-oblong), 6.2–13.5 by 0.7–1.2 cm, index 8.8–12.2; apex obtuse. Inflorescences single or few together, 23—34 cm long, 1-flowered; peduncle 13–22 cm long; scales c. 4; floral bracts 0.9–1.2 cm long. Flowers: pedicel and ovary 3–4.8 cm long; basal node 0.7–0.9 cm above the floral bract attachment. Median sepal free, recurved, ovate, c. 7.5 by 0.8 cm, index 9.3—9.4; margins slightly and minutely erose; apex long-acuminate; glabrous; 3-nerved. Lateral sepals free, recurved, ovate, c. 7.5 by 0.8 cm, index 9.3—9.4;. Petals porrect, ovate, c. 0.96 by 0.7 cm, index c. 1.4; margins minutely erose, ciliolate; surface glabrous; apex acute; 1-nerved. Lip about straight, thick, oblong, slightly narrowed near the base and slightly beyond half-way its length, c. 1.38 by 0.26 cm, index c. 5.3 (without spreading); margins entire; near the base densely hirsute, further glabrous; apex obtuse; upper side with two converging ridges near the base which almost meet with a narrow median slit in between and then continue up to c. 2/5 of the length of the lip, and which, close to the base, have two shorter, converging ridges in between; upper surface slightly convex, at the base with two densely hirsute patches near the margins, elsewhere glabrous; underside with a deep median furrow, convex and densely hirsute near the base, further slightly concave and glabrous. Column including stelidia c. 0.4 cm long; column foot distinctly widened, with patent, obtuse lateral teeth; stigma narrowly obovate, near the base slightly protruding from the column face; stelidia sigmoid, narrowly triangular, near the base subulate, c. 0.25 cm long, acute; pollinia 4.
(after Vermeulen et al. 2020)

Sepals bright golden yellow. Basal third of lip brown and tip yellow, in between brown. Part of column-foot purplish.

Common epiphyte forming large clumps. Elevation 2700–3100 m.

Bulbophyllum dologlossum J.J.Verm., Schuit. & de Vogel belongs in series B.

Bulbophyllum dologlossum J.J.Verm., Schuit. & de Vogel is identified within series B by the presence of four ridges (two long and two short) near the base of the lip, combined with the large size of the flowers.
Bulbophyllum dologlossum J.J.Verm., Schuit. & de Vogel is most similar to Bulbophyllum ischyron J.J.Verm., Schuit. & de Vogel, but differs in the long-acuminate sepals (versus sepals acute), the 1-nerved petals (versus petals 4-nerved), the oblong lip which is slightly narrowed near the base and about half-way, (versus lip ovate-oblong which gradually tapers to the apex), with 4 ridges on the upper side (versus ridges 2), and the curved stelidia (versus stelidia straight).
