Bulbophyllum campylopetalum J.J.Verm., Schuit. & de Vogel, Males. Orchid J. 21 (2018) 61

Type: Jongejan cult. 1623 (leg. T.M. Reeve) (holo L)

Epiphytes. Rhizome 0.18–0.3 cm diam.; rhizome scale leaves not long persistent, disintegrating into few thin fibers and a woolly mass. Pseudobulbs 0.2–1.0 cm apart, prostrate to obliquely erect, ovoid-conical, 0.6–1.2 by 0.4–0.6 cm, somewhat flattened, obtusely 4–6-angled. Leaf petiole 0.1–0.9 cm long; blade elliptic to obovate, 1.6–4.8 by 0.8–1.5 cm, index 2.0–3.6; apex obtuse. Inflorescences 5.5–8.0 cm long, solitary to few in a fascicle, 1-flowered; peduncle 2.1–3.5 cm long; scale leaves c. 2, the longest 0.2–0.4 cm long; floral bracts 0.2–0.38 cm long. Pedicel and ovary 2.4–3.8 cm long; basal node 0.2–0.4 cm above the floral bract attachment. Median sepal free, slightly recurved, elliptic to ovate, 1.05–1.22 by 0.27–0.36 cm, index 3.3–4.4, rather thin, thick in the apical part; margins entire; apex acute to acuminate; surface on upper side in the apical half sparsely and minutely papillose to densely hirsute, otherwise glabrous, towards the apex glabrous or papillose(-ciliolate); 3–5-nerved. Lateral sepals as the median, recurved, oblique, elliptic(-oblong), 1.2–1.7 by 0.38–0.45 cm, index 3.1–3.9, thick, but rather thin near the base; margins glabrous; apex (sub-)acute; surface on upper side c. glabrous to densely hirsute except near the base. Petals porrect, downwards pointing falcate, elliptic to obovate, 0.26–0.32 by 0.06–0.1 cm, index 2.6–5.4; margins entire to slightly erose, papillose towards the apex; apex rounded; surface glabrous but on upper side papillose near the apex; thin, rather thick towards the apex; 1-nerved. Lip a little below halfway slightly recurved, oblong with a slightly wider basal part; 0.28–0.32 by 0.12–0.16 cm, index 1.8–2.7 (without spreading), thick; margins entire, glabrous; above just above the ligament with 2 conical calli with a deep basal cavity in between, with 2 distinct, rather narrow, rounded ridges which start near the base, at the margins, diverge and run c. parallel and close to the lip margins, then abruptly converge and continue, running c. parallel and rather close together, up to the slightly convex apical part of the lip, where they diverge a little and gradually merge into the lip surface, upper surface glabrous but ridges distinctly papillose up to the point where they abruptly converge; below glabrous, with a wide, flat median ridge with a shallow median furrow along the entire length of the lip; apex rounded to truncate. Column including stelidia 0.3–0.44 cm long; column foot not or hardly widened at the apex; stigma elliptic; stelidia (slightly) downwards falcate, subulate, 0.09–0.13 cm long, with obtuse apex, upper margin with or without a small tooth near the base, lower margin, lower down, with a deltoid to triangular, obtuse to acute wing; anther with a wide, papillose ridge, front drawn out into a long, thick, ovate, concave, rounded-truncate, papillose beak; pollinia 4.
(after Vermeulen, Schuiteman & de Vogel 2018)

Median sepal brown-purple, towards base and margins yellow, nerves darker brown-purple. Lateral sepals densely suffused brown-purple, yellow with brown-purple nerves at the very base only. Petals yellow, black-purple towards the apex. Lip white, spotted purple, papillae on upper side dark purple

  • Family Orchidaceae
  • Subfamily Epidendroideae
  • Tribe Dendrobieae
  • Subtribe Bulbophyllinae
  • Genus Bulbophyllum
  • Section Papulipetalum
  • Species Bulbophyllum campylopetalum

Bulbophyllum campylopetalum is similar to Bulbophyllum brachychilum Schltr. in the partly papillose ridges on the upper side of the lip, but differs in its downwards-pointing falcate, elliptic to obovate petals (versus straight, ovate to triangular petals), as well as in the more prostrate, more distinctly angular pseudobulbs
