Bulbophyllum chionanthum

Bulbophyllum chionanthum J.J. Verm., Schuit. & de Vogel, Males. Orchid J. 21 (2018) 32

Type: Brass 12753 (holo L; iso AMES, BM, LAE).

Epiphytes. Rhizome 0.4–0.45 cm diam.; rhizome scale leaves somewhat persistent, eventually with some thin fibers remaining. Pseudobulbs c. 1 cm apart, erect, ovoid, 2.7–5.0 by c. 1.2 cm. Leaf petiole 3.0–3.6 cm long; blade obovate, 16–21 by 2.6–5.0 cm, index 4.2–7.0; apex acuminate. Inflorescences solitary to many in a fascicle, 1-flowered, 7–8 cm long; peduncle c. 1.4 cm long; scale leaves c. 3, the longest c. 0.75 cm long; floral bracts 0.85–1.1 cm long. Pedicel and ovary 3.15–4.5 cm long; basal node 0.38–0.48 cm above the floral bract attachment. Median sepal free, porrect to slightly recurved, (elliptic-)obovate, 1.6–2.95 by 0.35–0.6 cm, index 3.7–5.8, rather thin; margins entire; apex obtuse to subacute; c. 5-nerved; glabrous. Lateral sepals as the median one but (slightly) recurved, slightly oblique, elliptic, 1.6–3.1 by 0.3–0.8 cm, index 3.7–5.8. Petals adnate to the column at the very base, porrect, elliptic to obovate, 0.3–0.4 by 0.08–0.15 cm, index 2.5–5.0; apex obtuse; margins entire; glabrous; 1-nerved. Lip somewhat about halfway recurved, c. oblong in outline, 0.28–0.3 by 0.15–0.19 cm, index 1.7–1.9 (without spreading); margins entire; above near the base slightly concave, with 2 high, obtuse ridges which emerge close to the margins, just short of the widest part of the lip, then converge along the length of the lip, enclosing a concave area, to just short of the apex, where they merge into the convex apical part of the lip; below with a median ridge with a rounded crest and a thin, shallow median groove to just short of the apex of the lip; apex obtuse; glabrous. Column including stelidia 0.18–0.21 cm long; column foot not widened; stigma elliptic; stelidia porrect, triangular, 0.09–0.1 cm long, with acute apex, upper margin with a slight, deltoid, obtuse tooth; anther with a rather narrow, rounded ridge, in front drawn out into a rather thick, concave, oblong, widely rounded beak, its surface minutely papillose; pollinia 4, the inner pair somewhat shorter than the outer pair.

Bulbophyllum chionanthum is similar to Bulbophyllum tetratropis in the narrow lateral sepals (index 2.5 or more) combined with the elliptic to obovate median sepal, but differs in the smaller lip (0.28–0.3 versus 0.5–0.55 cm long) and in the glabrous lip margins (not ciliolate)
