Hemerocallis middendorffii

Extra Early Bloom, reblooms in August        Diploid

This is a species Daylily with a few very interesting characteristics. First is how very early it blooms. In our gardens it is the first to bloom, usually about the end of May. Another is that it has no branches but rather produces a cluster of buds at the top of the scape that will open over a 2 to 3 week period. Next is how long the blooms last. Probably because of the cooler May temperatures individual blooms will often last up to 2 days. And last but definitely not least is that this Daylily reblooms! We grew middendorffii for many years in a rather shady location, and always enjoyed it as the earliest Daylily in the garden. It is documented to rebloom in August/September and occasionally did for us. A few years back, we dug and divided our old clump and lined it out in a full sun location. What a surprise we had when every plant rebloomed in August because of the better location.
