AFIT Bio for Dr. Glen P. Perram

Dr. Glen P. Perram

Dr. Perram served on the AFIT faculty from June 1989 to April 2024, when he retired as a Professor of Physics. Dr. Perram was the founding Director for the Center for Directed Energy (Jan 2000 - Sep 2005), Acting Associate Dean for Research, Graduate School of Engineering and Management (Jul 1998 – Sep 1999), and  Deputy Head, Department of Engineering Physics (Oct 1992 - Aug 1996). Prior to joining the AFIT faculty, Dr. Perram was Chief, Visible Chemical Laser Section, Advanced Radiation Technology Office, Air Force Weapons Laboratory (Sep 1985 - Jun 1989). He was elected as President, Faculty Council for the AFIT Graduate School of Engineering and Management for two terms (1996 – 1997 and 2011 - 2012). He was selected as a Fellow of the Directed Energy Professional Society in 2007 and the Air Force Outstanding Senior Civilian Scientist in 2013.

Professor Perram is an experimentalist in the area of atomic, molecular, and optical physics. His research applications included high power gas lasers, laser material interactions, remote sensing and laser weapon systems. Research included fundamental studies in spectroscopy and chemical kinetics, demonstration and characterization of new laser devices, the development of optical instruments and diagnostic techniques including hyperspectral imaging, and field observations of battlespace combustion events.

Professor Perram taught over 96 offerings of 24 different graduate physics, chemistry, optics and engineering courses, advised 36 PhD dissertations (4 in-progress), 50 MS theses and 23 undergraduate interns, and advised 4 postdoctoral researchers and 2 Research Faculty appointments.  Dr. Perram has authored 97 journal articles, 110 conference proceedings, 153 conference presentations, 8 technical reports, 4 book chapters and one textbook.  He was the Principal Investigator for 45 research grants with more than $24 M in AFIT funding.

Dr. Perram is a Registered Professional Engineer,Ohio Registration Number: E-60534 from 1995 - present.
