Growth habit brittle shrub, evergreen, 0.6 m to 2m, or tree reaching 15 m according to elevation;
Leaves 3.5-8 x 3.5 cm; evergreen; thick and leathery; oval, elliptic or oblong; rounded at both ends; margin revolute, entire, toothed; glabrous above except some multiradiate hairs; dense, tawny, persistent tomentum beneath made of simple, solitary and fascicled hairs; 5-12 vein pairs not densely covered with hairs; petiole 2-4 mm, brown tomentose;
Flowers May to July; female inflorescences 2-6 cm;
Fruits acorn 2 cm long, 1.5-1.8 cm in diameter; subglobose; glabrous; apex rounded; singly or paired, on a 2-6 cm long peduncle ; enclosed 1/2 by cup; cup adherent to nut only at base; scales grey brown tomentose from their base to middle, glabrous and red brown at their tip; maturing in 2 years;
