  • DESCRIPTION:  Dark green leaves on a thick shaggy trunk that is typically about 20 cm in diameter, sometimes wider. The trunk is very low to subterranean ( Underground part of a seed plant body that originates usually from hypocotyl, functions as a organ of absorption, aeration and food storage or as a means of support is called subterranean) in young plants, but lengthens above ground with age. It can grow into very old specimens with 6–7 m of trunk; however, the plant is very slow-growing and requires about 50–100 years to achieve this height. Trunks can branch multiple times, thus producing multiple heads of leaves.

  • DESCRIPTION: All parts of the plant are poisonous. A number of glycosidal derivatives of cardenolide have been detected of which thevetin is present throughout except in the leaves and fruit-pulp. The leaves contain several other glycosides including neriantin. The former substance is cardio-toxic acting like digitalis, but only fractionally as strong. It has been suggested as a substitute for use in digitalis-intolerance. The kernel contains another and more toxic bitter principle which causes tetanic convulsions and speedy death for which it is commonly used in India for suicide and murder.

  • DESCRIPTION: Peltophorum pterocarpum is a  deciduous tree usually reaching a height of 15 (-24) m, although it may attain 50 m and a diameter of 50 (-100) cm. Bark smooth, grey; crown dense, spreading.
  • Leaves - The leaves are bipinnate, 30–60 cm long, with 16-20 pinnae, each pinna with 20-40 oval leaflets 8–25 mm long and 4–10 mm broad. 
  • Flowers -The flowers are yellow, 2.5–4 cm diameter, produced in large compound racemes up to 20 cm long. Trees begin to flower after about four years.
  • Fruits - fruits are 1-4 seeded pods, flat, thin, winged, 5-10 cm long, dark red when ripe, then turning black.
  • Roots - Pterocarpum has a deep root system. The specific epithet 'pterocarpum' alludes to its winged seed. 
  • REMARK : There is a confusion to identify peltophorum and gulmohur as they look very similar. but there is slight difference. The difference is colour of branches. the branches of peltophorum is brown in colour while the branch colour of gulmohur is green. 
  • USES: Use as an ornamental tree. and as avenue tree alternately with gulmohur. The wood has a wide variety of uses, including cabinet-making and the foliage is used as a fodder crop.





SIRIS

  • DESCIPTION : It is a tree growing to a height of 18–30 m tall with a trunk 50 cm to 1 m in diameter. The leaves are bipinnate, 7.5–15 cm long, with one to four pairs of pinnae, each pinna with 6–18 leaflets. The flowers are white, with numerous 2.5–3.8 cm long stamens, and very fragrant. The fruit is a pod 15–30 cm long and 2.5-5.0 cm broad, containing six to twelve seeds.
  • REMARK: Siris also looks alike peltophorum. but basic difference between siris and peltophorum is the size of their leaves. The leaf size of siris is more than that of peltophorum.

  • Leaves  The leaves are thin, opposite and ovate to lanceolate in shape. Surface is shiny and bright green.
  • Flowers - Its unscented flowers usually have four petals which on opening look yellow but gradually take on a deep red colour. They grow in clusters at the tips of the branches. 
  • Fruits  Fruit is produced after three years, viable seeds after five. These seeds are distributed by birds.
  • Roots - Sandalwood trees are semi-parasites. They derive some of their nourishment from the root systems of neighbouring plants, but can also survive alone, without a host plant.
  • REMARK: The leaves of the sandalwood are very smooth and having light green colour with light touch of yellow colour.

  • DESCRIPTION: Anthocephaluscadamba is a large tree with a broad crown and straight cylindrical bole. The tree: may reach a height of 45 m with trunk diameters of 100-(160) cm. The tree sometimes has small buttresses and a broad crown. The bark is gray, smooth in young trees, rough and longitudinally fissured in old trees. 
  • Leaves - Leaves glossy green, opposite, simple more or less sessile to petiolate, ovate to elliptical (15-50 x 8-25 cm). 
  • Flowers - Inflorescence in clusters; terminal globose heads without bracteoles, subsessile fragrant, orange or yellow flowers; Flowers bisexual, 5-merous, calyx tube funnel-shaped, corolla gamopetalous saucer-shaped with a narrow tube, the narrow lobes imbricate in bud.
