Abstract

 接眼レンズの持つ光学特性に応じて表示パネルが正確に位置合わせできるように構成された頭部装着型表示装置を提供する。 接眼光学系を透明樹脂成形レンズで構成し、表示パネルに最も近接したレンズの四隅に、表示パネル・アセンブリー側の固着穴に挿通する固着ピンを一体成形する。4本の固着ピン1002~1005は、表示パネルの有効エリアに表示された映像の光が通過しない場所に配置される。また、レンズ部分1001の光学中心に対し対称となる位置に、固着ピン1002と固着ピン1005の組、固着ピン1003と固着ピン1004の組がそれぞれ配設されている。

Description

頭部装着型表示装置並びに光学ユニット
 本明細書で開示する技術は、ユーザーの頭部に装着して用いられる頭部装着型表示装置並びに光学ユニットに係り、特に、映像を表示する表示パネルと表示パネルに表示された画像をユーザーの眼に投影する接眼光学部を有する頭部装着型表示装置並びに光学ユニットに関する。
 頭部に装着して映像を視聴する表示装置、すなわちヘッド・マウント・ディスプレイ(HMD)が広く知られている。ヘッド・マウント・ディスプレイは、左右の眼毎に光学ユニットを持ち、また、ヘッドフォンと併用し、視覚及び聴覚を制御できるように構成されている。頭部に装着した際に外界を完全に遮るように構成すれば、視聴時の仮想現実感が増す。また、ヘッド・マウント・ディスプレイは、左右の眼に違う映像を映し出すことも可能であり、左右の眼に視差のある画像を表示すれば3D画像を提示することができる。
 ヘッド・マウント・ディスプレイは、ユーザーに虚像を提供する(すなわち、虚像を眼の網膜上に結像させる)表示システムである。ここで、虚像は、物体が、焦点距離よりレンズに近い位置にある場合に、その物体側にできるものである。
 ユーザーに虚像を観賞させる場合、例えば、虚像が形成されるユーザーからの距離などは、映像によって変化させるのが好ましい。例えば、3枚の高屈折率プラスチック・レンズからなる拡大レンズにより、対角2インチ以下の小型液晶表示素子を用いた小型軽量且つ広い視野角を有する頭部装着型液晶表示装置について提案がなされている(例えば、特許文献1を参照のこと)。
 また、映像に適した形で虚像を提供する表示装置について提案がなされている(例えば、特許文献2を参照のこと)。この表示装置は、ユーザーの左眼と右眼とで観察される同一の虚像を、同一平面上に配置する拡大光学系を備え、映像のアスペクト比に応じて、虚像のユーザーからの距離及び虚像の大きさを制御するようになっている。例えば、ハイビジョン放送による、アスペクト比が16:9の映画やドラマなどの映像は、ユーザーから15メートル程度の遠い位置に大きな虚像を網膜に結像し、NTSC(National Television System Committee)方式の、アスペクト比が4:3のテレビジョン信号の映像は、ユーザーから3メートル程度の比較的近い位置に中間の大きさの虚像を網膜に結像し、ユーザーに臨場感を感じさせるとともに、虚像を鑑賞する際の疲労感を軽減する。
 ヘッド・マウント・ディスプレイの左右の眼の表示部に有機EL(Electro-Luminescence)などの高解像度の素子を用いるとともに光学系で適当な画角を設定し、さらにヘッドフォンで多チャンネルを再現すれば、さらに映画館で視聴するような臨場感を再現することができるであろう。本出願人は、映画館の最も良い席と同じ視聴環境を提供できるヘッド・マウント・ディスプレイを目指している。
 ヘッド・マウント・ディスプレイでは、光学系の光軸が左右で高い精度で一致していないと、観察するユーザーが映像を不快に感じてしまう。左右の光軸を一致させるために、観察される映像が調整指標に対して一致するよう左右の表示部の位置を調整するのが一般的である。例えば、液晶表示素子をX、Y、ω軸周りに相当する位置調整を行なってから保持部材に装着した後、液晶表示素子を固定した保持部材を、接眼レンズを収容した光学ユニットに取り付けるようにして、液晶表示素子の光軸の調整を不要又は低減した頭部装着型の映像表示装置について提案がなされている(例えば、特許文献3を参照のこと)。
 ヘッド・マウント・ディスプレイとしての要求精度を満足するためには、レンズの持つ光学特性に応じた表示パネルの位置決め固定が必要である、と本出願人は考えている。レンズに対する表示パネルの位置決め精度は、少なくとも画素サイズ(例えば、有機EL素子を用いる場合は10ミクロン)以下でなくてはならない。
 ところが、例えば突き当てや穴の嵌め合いといった、機械的な位置決めでは、上記の要求精度を満たすことは困難である。また、機械的な位置決めで上記の要求精度を満たす構造を実現するには、部品の高精度化と精度に応じた管理が必要となり、部品コスト増、組み立てコスト増を招来する。
 例えば、液晶表示パネル本体の基板と接眼レンズを一体成形して小型、軽量化したヘッド・マウント・ディスプレイについて提案がなされている(例えば、特許文献4を参照のこと)。しかしながら、液晶表示パネル本体の基板と接眼レンズを一体にしてしまうと、液晶表示パネル本体と接眼レンズの光軸の位置決め精度は成形時に固定され、さらに高精度に位置調整することはできない。また、接眼光学系が複数のレンズで構成される場合、液晶表示パネル本体を含めて複数の接眼レンズを一体成形するのは困難であると思料される。

 本明細書で開示する技術の目的は、映像を表示する表示パネルと表示パネルに表示された画像をユーザーの眼に投影する接眼レンズを備え、接眼レンズの持つ光学特性に応じて表示パネルが正確に位置合わせできるように構成された、優れた頭部装着型表示装置並びに光学ユニットを提供することにある。
 本願は、上記課題を参酌してなされたものであり、請求項1に記載の技術は、
 画像を表示する表示パネルを含む表示パネル部と、
 前記表示パネル部を取り付ける部位と一体的に形成されたレンズを有し、前記表示パネルが表示する映像に対して光学処理する接眼光学部と、
 映像信号を処理する映像信号処理部と、
 前記映像信号処理部で処理された映像信号に基づいて、前記表示パネルを駆動する表示制御部と、
を具備する頭部装着型表示装置である。
 本願の請求項2に記載の技術によれば、請求項1に記載の頭部装着型表示装置の前記取り付ける部位を有するレンズは、透明樹脂成形レンズからなり、前記取り付ける部位が一体成形されている。
 本願の請求項3に記載の技術によれば、請求項2に記載の頭部装着型表示装置の前記取り付ける部位は、前記透明樹脂成形レンズに一体成形された複数の固着ピンからなる。そして、前記固着ピンを前記表示パネル部側に穿設された固着穴に挿通させて、前記表示パネル部を前記接眼光学部に取り付けるように構成されている。
 本願の請求項4に記載の技術によれば、請求項3に記載の頭部装着型表示装置において、前記固着ピンは、前記透明樹脂成形レンズ表面上で、前記表示パネルの有効エリアに表示された映像の光が通過しない場所に配設されている。
 本願の請求項5に記載の技術によれば、請求項3に記載の頭部装着型表示装置において、前記複数の固着ピンは、前記透明樹脂成形レンズの光学中心に対し対称となる位置に配設されている。
 本願の請求項6に記載の技術によれば、請求項1に記載の頭部装着型表示装置の前記接眼光学部は、複数のレンズを有し、前記取り付ける部位と一体となるレンズは、前記表示パネルに最も近接している。
 本願の請求項7に記載の技術によれば、請求項1に記載の頭部装着型表示装置は、前記表示パネルを冷却する表示パネル冷却部をさらに備えている。
 本願の請求項8に記載の技術によれば、請求項7に記載の頭部装着型表示装置の前記表示パネル冷却部は、前記表示パネルの基板側に面接触するヒート・シンクを有している。
 本願の請求項9に記載の技術によれば、請求項8に記載の頭部装着型表示装置は、前記ヒート・シンクを前記表示パネルの基板側に面接触させたときに生じる間隙を充填する熱伝導性グリースをさらに有している。
 本願の請求項10に記載の技術によれば、請求項1に記載の頭部装着型表示装置は、前記表示パネルの発光面を封止する表示パネル封止部をさらに備えている。
 本願の請求項11に記載の技術によれば、請求項10に記載の頭部装着型表示装置の前記表示パネル封止部は、前記表示パネル保持部により固定された前記表示パネルの側面部分を覆うカバー・フレームと、前記カバー・フレームの開口部分を塞ぐ蓋部を有している。
 本願の請求項12に記載の技術によれば、請求項11に記載の頭部装着型表示装置において、前記蓋部は、前記表示パネルの基板側に面接触するヒート・シンクである。
 本願の請求項13に記載の技術によれば、請求項12に記載の頭部装着型表示装置は、前記ヒート・シンクを前記表示パネルの基板側に面接触させたときに生じる間隙を充填する熱伝導性グリースをさらに有している。
 また、本願の請求項14に記載の発明は、
 画像を表示する表示パネルを含む表示パネル部と、
 前記表示パネル部を取り付ける部位と一体的に形成されたレンズを有し、前記表示パネルが表示する映像に対して光学処理する接眼光学部と、
を具備する頭部装着型表示装置用の光学ユニットである。
 本明細書で開示する技術によれば、映像を表示する表示パネルと表示パネルに表示された画像をユーザーの眼に投影する接眼レンズを備え、接眼レンズの持つ光学特性に応じて表示パネルが正確に位置合わせできるように構成された、優れた頭部装着型表示装置並びに光学ユニットを提供することができる。
 本明細書で開示する技術によれは、小型、軽量化を損なうことなく、表示パネルの画素サイズ以下となる精度で、接眼レンズに対して表示パネルを位置合わせできるように構成された、優れた頭部装着型表示装置並びに光学ユニットを提供することができる。
 本明細書で開示する技術のさらに他の目的、特徴や利点は、後述する実施形態や添付する図面に基づくより詳細な説明によって明らかになるであろう。

 以下、図面を参照しながら本明細書で開示する技術の実施形態について詳細に説明する。
 図1には、ヘッド・マウント・ディスプレイを含む画像表示システムの構成を模式的に示している。図示のシステムは、視聴コンテンツのソースとなるブルーレイ・ディスク再生装置20と、ブルーレイ・ディスク再生装置20から出力されるAV信号の処理を行なうフロント・エンド・ボックス40と、ブルーレイ・ディスク再生装置20の再生コンテンツの出力先となる頭部装着型の表示装置(ヘッド・マウント・ユニット)10と、ブルーレイ・ディスク再生装置20の再生コンテンツの他の出力先となるハイビジョン・ディスプレイ(例えば、HDMI(登録商標)対応テレビ)30で構成される。ヘッド・マウント・ユニット10とフロント・エンド・ボックス40で、1セットのヘッド・マウント・ディスプレイが構成される。
 フロント・エンド・ボックス40は、ブルーレイ・ディスク再生装置20から出力されるAV信号をHDMI(登録商標)入力すると、例えば信号処理して、HDMI(登録商標)出力するHDMI(登録商標)リピーターに相当する。また、フロント・エンド・ボックス40は、ブルーレイ・ディスク再生装置20の出力先をヘッド・マウント・ユニット10又はハイビジョン・ディスプレイ30のいずれかに切り替える2出力スイッチャーでもある。図示の例では、フロント・エンド・ボックス40は2出力であるが、3以上の出力を有していてもよい。但し、フロント・エンド・ボックス40は、AV信号の出力先を排他的とし、且つ、ヘッド・マウント・ユニット10への出力を最優先とする。
 なお、HDMI(登録商標)(High-Definition Multimedia Interface)は、DVI(Digital Visual Interface)を基にし、物理層にTMDS(Transition Minimized Differential Signaling)を用いた、主に音声と映像の伝送を用途としたディジタル家電向けのインターフェース規格である。本システムは、例えばHDMI(登録商標)1.4に準拠する。
 ブルーレイ・ディスク再生装置20とフロント・エンド・ボックス40間、並びに、フロント・エンド・ボックス40とハイビジョン・ディスプレイ30間は、それぞれHDMI(登録商標)ケーブルで接続されている。フロント・エンド・ボックス40とヘッド・マウント・ユニット10間も、HDMI(登録商標)ケーブルで接続するように構成することも可能であるが、その他の仕様のケーブルを用いてAV信号をシリアル転送するようにしてもよい。但し、フロント・エンド・ボックス40とヘッド・マウント・ユニット10間を接続するケーブル1本で、AV信号と電力を供給するものとし、ヘッド・マウント・ユニット10はこのケーブルを介して駆動電力も得ることができる。
 図2には、ヘッド・マウント・ユニット10の本体部の上面を俯瞰した様子を示している。
 ヘッド・マウント・ユニット10は、左眼用及び右眼用に独立した2つの表示部を備えている。各表示部は、例えば有機EL素子からなる表示パネルを用いている。また、左右の各表示部は、低歪みで且つ高解像度の広視野角の接眼光学系を装備している。この接眼光学系で表示パネルの映像を拡大投影して広画角を設定するとともに、ヘッドフォンで多チャンネルを再現すれば、映画館で視聴するような臨場感を再現することができる。
 ヘッド・マウント・ユニット10は左右に独立して光学系を持つ一方、眼の高さや眼幅にはユーザー毎に個人差があるため、光学系と装着したユーザーの眼とを位置合わせする必要がある。このため、ヘッド・マウント・ユニット10の本体部は、右眼用の表示部と左眼用の表示部の間に、眼幅を調整する眼幅調整機構を装備している。
 図3には、ヘッド・マウント・ディスプレイ10の内部構成を模式的に示している。以下、各部について説明する。
 操作部301は、タッチセンサーや、ボタン、キーなどの操作子(例えば電源ボタンや十字キー。いずれも図示しない)を備えている。制御部302は、操作部301を介した操作情報に応じて、ヘッド・マウント・ユニット10内の動作を統括的に制御する。具体的には、制御部302は、映像制御部303に対し映像信号の処理を指示し、OSD制御部304にOSD画面の描画を指示し、その他のさまざまな機器内動作をMISC制御部305に指示する。
 映像入力インターフェース306は、ブルーレイ・ディスク再生装置20(図1を参照のこと)から再生出力される映像信号を、フロント・エンド・ボックス40経由で入力する。映像制御部303は、制御部302からの指示に応じて、入力された映像信号に対する画質調整やその他の信号処理を行ない、映像バッファー307内に書き込む。また、制御部302は、操作部301からの操作情報に基づいて、映像内にカーソルを描画するよう映像制御部303に指示する。
 OSD制御部304は、制御部302から伝達された情報に応じて、本来の映像に重畳するOSD画面を描画して、OSDバッファー308に書き込む。OSD画面は、タッチセンサーなどの操作部301を介してユーザーが選択する1以上のメニュー・ボタン並びにメニュー・ボタンからプルダウンされるサブメニュー、そのため文言情報などを含む。
 MISC制御部305は、制御部302から伝達された情報に応じて、OSD制御並びに映像制御以外の制御を行なう。
 画像合成部309は、映像バッファー307に書き込まれた映像データ上に、OSDバッファー308に書き込まれたOSD画面を重畳して、表示制御部310に出力する。
 表示制御部310は、入力した映像信号を左眼用映像信号と右眼用映像信号に分離して、左眼用表示パネル311L及び右眼用表示パネル311Rへの描画を制御する。左眼用表示パネル311L及び右眼用表示パネル311Rは、例えば有機EL素子や液晶などの表示デバイスからなる。
 左眼用表示パネル311L及び右眼用表示パネル311Rには、それぞれ映像を拡大投影する接眼光学レンズ部312L、312Rが装備されている。左右の接眼光学レンズ部312L、312Rは、それぞれ複数のレンズの組み合わせからなり、左眼用表示パネル311L及び右眼用表示パネル311Rが表示する映像に対し、観察者の左右の眼に拡大投影するなどの光学処理を行なう。左眼用表示パネル311L及び右眼用表示パネル311Rの発光面に表示された映像は、それぞれ接眼光学レンズ部を通過する際に拡大され、ユーザーの網膜に大きな虚像を結像する。そして、観察するユーザーの脳内では左眼用映像と右眼用映像が融像される。
 ヘッド・マウント・ディスプレイとしての要求精度を満足するためには、接眼光学レンズ部312L、312Rの持つ光学特性に応じて表示パネル311L、311Rを位置決めして固定する必要がある。接眼光学レンズ部312L、312Rに対する表示パネル311L、311Rの位置決め精度は、少なくとも画素サイズ(例えば、有機EL素子を用いる場合は10ミクロン)以下でなくてはならない。
 ここで、接眼光学レンズ部312L、312Rの光学特性は、設計値に対して、公差内でバラツキを持つ。また、左眼用表示パネル311L及び右眼用表示パネル311Rの画素位置は、表示パネル311L、311Rを取り付けたパネル外枠に対して、公差内でバラツキを持つ。
 また、接眼レンズがガラス素材の場合、接眼レンズに表示パネルをダイレクトに位置決め固定することはできず、通常、接眼レンズを保持する第1の機構部品と、この第1の機構部品に表示パネルを取り付ける第2の機構部品が、接眼レンズと表示パネルの位置決め固定に介在すると考えられる。
 例えば、本出願人に既に譲渡されている特願2011-186622号明細書には、図4に示すように、パネル外枠403Aに表示パネルをあらかじめ固定したパネル部403をパネル・ホルダー402で支持し、このパネル・ホルダー402を接眼レンズのレンズ鏡筒401に取り付けるように構成されたヘッド・マウント・ユニットの光学ユニットについて開示されている。
 左右の光学ユニットは対称的なので、図4では左眼用の光学ユニットを示し、右眼用の光学ユニットの図示を省略している。図示の光学ユニットは、複数のレンズを収容したレンズ鏡筒401と、パネル・ホルダー402と、表示パネルをあらかじめパネル外枠403Aに固定したパネル部403と、パネル・ホルダー402ごと表示パネル側面部分を覆うカバー・フレーム404と、高い熱伝動性を持つ素材で構成されるヒート・シンク405で構成される。
 レンズ鏡筒401の表面には四隅に4本の固着ピンが形設されている。但し、レンズ鏡筒401の光学特性は、設計値に対して公差内でばらつき(すなわち、個体差)を持つ。また、パネル・ホルダー402は、レンズ鏡筒401に螺着されている。
 パネル部403は、パネル外枠403Aに表示パネルをあらかじめ接着固定したものである。パネル外枠403Aには、レンズ鏡筒401に固定された各固着ピン(前述)を挿通させる固着穴が穿設されている。表示パネルは、有機ELなどの表示素子からなり、パネル外枠403Aは表示パネルを実装した基板(FPC:Flexible Printed Circuits)からなる。表示パネルの画素位置は、パネル外枠403Aに対して、公差内でのばらつきを持つ。
 図5には、パネル・ホルダー402の各固着ピンをパネル部403側の対応する固着穴にそれぞれ挿通させている様子を図解している。また、図6乃至図9には、接眼レンズを収容したレンズ鏡筒401に、パネル・ホルダー402を介してパネル部403を位置決め固定する手順を図解している。
 まず、図6に示すようにレンズ鏡筒401の表面に、パネル・ホルダー402を四隅の4本のネジで取り付ける。この状態では、パネル・ホルダー402の固着ピンは、レンズ鏡筒401とは反対側に突出している。
 次いで、図7に示すように、レンズ鏡筒401の表面に螺着したパネル・ホルダー402の各固着ピンを、表示パネルを搭載したパネル部403側の対応する固着穴にそれぞれ挿通させる。そして、図8に示すように、各固着穴にUV樹脂を流し込んで、固着ピンとの間隙を充填する。この状態で、パネル部403を介して表示パネルの位置を、XYZ軸並びにロール、ピッチ、ヨーの6軸方向に変化させながら、レンズ鏡筒401の光学特性が持つ公差内での個体ばらつきや、パネル外枠403Aに対する表示パネルの画素位置の個体ばらつきに対応して、レンズ鏡筒401の光軸に対して表示パネルを位置決めする。レンズ鏡筒401の光軸に対する表示パネルの位置決めを、例えば画素サイズ以下の精度で行なう。
 そして、レンズ鏡筒401に対する表示パネルの位置が定まると、図9に示すように各固着ピン付近を紫外線で照射して、固着ピンとの間隙を充填させたUV樹脂を硬化させることで、レンズ鏡筒401に対して表示パネルを所望する位置で固定することができる。
 図4、図5、並びに図6乃至図9に示したような、パネル・ホルダー402を介在させた位置決め固定方法の場合、レンズ鏡筒401に対する位置決め要素(位置決め穴)と固定手段(ねじ4本)が必要である。また、パネル・ホルダー402は精度管理が必要な高付加価値部品であり、コスト増を招来する。パネル・ホルダー402は、例えば金属プレス品であり、不要な光反射防止のための表面処理(若しくはつや消し塗装)が必要である。パネル・ホルダー402をレンズ鏡筒401に螺着する際には、微細な地金の削り屑、めっきによる粉塵が発生し、表示パネルの有効な表示エリアにこの種の粉塵が付着することが懸念される。
 付言すれば、パネル・ホルダー402を介在させて表示パネルの位置決めを行なう場合、(1)位置決め要素、固定要素を配置するスペースが必要になる、(2)各固着ピンについてパネル部403側の対応する固着穴と中心位置を一致させなければならない、などの条件により、レンズ鏡筒401の小型化、軽量化が困難になる。また、固着穴に充填させたUV樹脂を硬化させる際、固着ピンの影がUV樹脂の照射の妨げとなり、硬化不十分の原因となる。UV樹脂をムラなく硬化させるには、影ができないよう、固着ピンの上側から紫外線を照射するしかない。
 そこで、本出願人は、表示パネル(具体的には、表示パネルを搭載したパネル部)を位置決めして固定する取付部を接眼光学レンズ部に一体的に設け、パネル・ホルダー402のような部品の介在なしに、表示パネルを接眼光学レンズ部にダイレクトに取り付ける方法を提案する。
 具体的には、接眼光学レンズ部を構成する少なくとも1つのレンズを透明樹脂成形レンズとして、この透明樹脂成形レンズに、表示パネルの取付部としての固着ピンを一体成形する。接眼光学レンズ部は、通常、複数のレンズで構成されるが、これらのすべてを樹脂成形品とすることで、接眼光学レンズ部を低廉で軽量にすることができる。
 ここで、レンズ材質として、光学用途に使用される透明な熱可塑性樹脂(例えば、COP(Cyclic Olefin Polymer)、PC(PolyCarbonate)、PMMA(PolyMethyl MethAcrylate)、MS(Methylmethacrylate Styrene copolymerization)樹脂など)を挙げることができる。
 接眼光学レンズ部内の2以上のレンズを樹脂成形品とした場合、これらのうちいずれの樹脂成形レンズに固着ピンを一体成形してもよい。但し、組立ての容易さや、取り付け位置調整などの作業性などを考慮すると、表示パネルに最も近接した(すなわち、最外の)レンズを固着ピンと一体成形することが好ましい。
 また、レンズ表面に固着ピンを形成したことにより表示パネルの表示映像の観察を妨げないよう、接眼光学レンズ部の光学特性を十分考慮して、固着ピンを配置する場所を決める必要がある。すなわち、表示パネルの有効エリアに表示された映像の光が通過しない場所に固着ピンを形設することが好ましい。さらに、各固着ピンについてパネル部側の対応する固着穴と中心位置を一致させる作業性などを考慮すると、樹脂成形レンズの光軸中心に対し対称となる位置に各固着ピンを配置することが好ましい。
 図10には、接眼光学レンズ部の光学特性を妨げない位置で、且つ、接眼光学レンズ部の光軸中心に対称位置に各固着ピンを一体成形した透明樹脂成形レンズの上面図(同図(A)を参照のこと)並びに側面図(同図(B)を参照のこと)を示している。
 長方形状の輪郭をなす透明樹脂成形部品1000の一方の表面(同図(B)中の底面側)には、接眼光学レンズとしての光学特性を得るよう、球面若しくは非球面のレンズ形状をしたレンズ部分1001が形設されている。レンズ部分1001は、長方形のほぼ中央付近に光学中心を持つ。表示パネルの有効エリアに表示された映像の光は、このレンズ部分1001を通過して、観察者の眼に拡大投影される。
 また、透明樹脂成形部品1000の他方の表面(同図(B)中の上面側)は、ほぼ平坦な形状をなし、当該表面の四隅には、固着ピン1002、1003、1004、1005が突設している。これら4本の固着ピン1002~1005は、表示パネルの有効エリアに表示された映像の光が通過しない場所に配置されており、表示パネルの映像の観察を妨害しない。また、レンズ部分1001の光学中心に対し対称となる位置に、固着ピン1002と固着ピン1005の組、固着ピン1003と固着ピン1004の組がそれぞれ配設されている。
 また、図11には、表示パネルに最も近接した透明樹脂成形レンズに固着ピンを形成し、この固着ピンにパネル部をダイレクトに取り付けた状態の接眼光学レンズ部1101の断面構成を示している。
 表示パネル1102をPC(PolyCarbonate)からなるパネル外枠1103Aに搭載して、パネル部1103が構成される。また、パネル外枠1103Aには、第1のレンズ1101-1に一体成形された各固着ピンと対応する位置に、固着穴が穿設されている。
 接眼光学レンズ部1101は、第1のレンズ1101-1、第2のレンズ1101-2、…、第nのレンズ1101-nの合計n枚の透明樹脂成形レンズを有し、これらは図示しないレンズ鏡筒によって所望の光学特性が得られるよう、位置決めして支持されている(各レンズの光軸は一致しているものとする)。
 第1のレンズ1101-1は、表示パネルに最も近接した(すなわち、最外の)位置に配置されている。第1のレンズ1101-1の一方の表面には、所望の光学特性を得るために、球面若しくは非球面のレンズ形状が形成されている。また、第1のレンズ1101-1の他方(表示パネル1102側)の表面には固着ピンが一体成形されている。図10を参照しながら既に説明したように、第1のレンズ1101-1の各固着ピンは、接眼光学レンズ部1101の光学特性を妨げず、且つ、光軸に対し対称となるように、四隅に配設されている。
 ここで、表示パネルの取り付け方法について、図12~図14を参照しながら説明しておく。
 まず、図12に示すように、第1のレンズ1101-1に一体成形された各固着ピンを、パネル外枠1103A側の対応する固着穴にそれぞれ挿通させて、パネル部1103ごと表示パネル1102を第1のレンズ1101-1にダイレクトで取り付ける。パネル部1103の取り付けに、ネジによる螺着作業を伴わないので、発塵するおそれがない。
 そして、パネル部1103を第1のレンズ1101-1に取り付けた状態で、表示パネル1102の位置を、XYZ軸並びにロール、ピッチ、ヨーの6軸方向に変化させながら、接眼光学レンズ部1101の光学特性が持つ公差内での個体ばらつきや、パネル外枠1103Aに対する表示パネル1102の画素位置の個体ばらつきに対応して、表示パネル1102を位置決めする。接眼光学レンズ部1101の光軸に対する表示パネル1102の位置決めを、例えば画素サイズ以下の精度で行なう。
 例えば、表示パネル1102の空間的な位置と姿勢を認識できるような発光パターンを表示パネル1102で表示させ、これをカメラ(図示しない)の撮影画像で認識しながら、接眼光学レンズ部1101に対する表示パネル1102の相対位置を6軸方向で調整する。
 そして、接眼光学レンズ部1101に対する表示パネル1102の位置が定まると、その位置を保持したまま、図13に示すように、各固着穴にUV樹脂を流し込んで、固着ピンとの間隙を充填する。但し、固着穴にUV樹脂をあらかじめ充填させておいてから、図12に示したような固着ピンを挿入する作業を行なうようにしてもよい。
 次いで、図14に示すように、各固着ピン付近を紫外線で照射して、固着ピンとの間隙を充填させたUV樹脂を硬化させることで、接眼光学レンズ部1101に対して表示パネル1102を所望する位置で固定する。各固着ピンは、透明樹脂成形レンズと一体成形ということは透明性がある。したがって、UV樹脂に紫外線を照射する際、固着ピンが影とならないので、硬化条件出しと管理が容易になる、というメリットがある。例えば、固定ピンの側面から紫外線を照射しても、ムラなくUV樹脂を硬化させることができる。
 接眼光学レンズ部1101で用いられる各レンズの材質は、光学用途に使用される透明な熱可塑性樹脂(例えば、COP、PC、PMMA、MS樹脂など)であり、PCなどからなるパネル外枠1103Aに近い線膨脹係数を有する。したがって、パネル外枠1103Aの固着穴とレンズ1101-1側の固着ピン間では温度変化に対する相対的な移動変化量がほぼ0に等しい。
 これに対し、図4~図9に示したように、パネル・ホルダー402を介して表示パネルをレンズ鏡筒401に取り付ける構造の場合には、金属素材のパネル・ホルダー402とPCを素材とするパネル外枠403Aとの相対的な膨張・収縮量差分は0.02ミリメートルと小さくない(但し、40度変動時の差分であり、レンズ中心と固着ピン間の距離を13ミリメートルとする)。このため、パネル外枠403A(すなわち、表示パネル)とレンズの光軸中心の温度変化に対する相対的な移動変化量を抑える工夫が必要になる。
 上述したように、本明細書で開示する技術によれば、パネル・ホルダー402すなわち表示パネルを取り付ける固着ピンのような取付部を、射出成形品である接眼レンズと一体で成形するので、保持構造の形状自由度が向上する、ということができる。
 また、図10~図14に示した表示パネルの取付構造によると、パネル・ホルダー402のような機構部品を介在させる必要がなくなる。したがって、パネル・ホルダー402の部品重量並びに部品コスト、パネル・ホルダー402をレンズ鏡筒401に螺着する作業コストを削減することができる。左右の表示パネルについて同様に当てはまることから、重量並びにコスト削減の効果は2倍である。また、パネル・ホルダー402の螺着に伴う粉塵の発生がなくなり、表示パネルの有効な表示エリアが粉塵の付着で汚染される心配もなくなる。
 なお、表示パネル1102の表面にゴミなどの異物が付着すると、レンズで拡大されてユーザーに観察され、画品位が低下して商品性を損なってしまう。このため、表示パネル1102の発光面を封止する防塵構造が必要である。この防塵構造について、図15を参照しながら説明する。同図中、表示パネル1102の発光面を防塵する封止構造は、主に接眼光学レンズ部1101のレンズ鏡筒、カバー・フレーム1104、ヒート・シンク1105の3点から構成される。
 接眼光学レンズ部1101のレンズ鏡筒とカバー・フレーム1104は、互いに対向する面で、隙間なく密着する。また、カバー・フレーム1104とヒート・シンク1105は、互いに対向する面で密着する。ここで、カバー・フレーム1104の裏面の表示パネル1102のFPC取り出し部分には、FPCへ外部負荷軽減のために、クッション材(図示しない)が貼設され、このクッション材を介してFPCを押さえる構造としている。上記のような組み立て作業は、クリーン・ブース内で行ない、組み立て時に粉塵の侵入や表示パネル1102の発光面への粉塵の付着を防止することが好ましい。そして、組立完了後は、表示パネル1102の発光面が防塵構造となる。
 また、ヘッド・マウント・ユニット10の表示部には、上述した有機EL素子や、液晶ディスプレイなどの、薄型の表示素子が用いられる。この種の半導体プロセスで製造された表示パネルは、消費電力に応じた発熱を伴うことが知られている。一方、表示パネルの最大駆動温度が定められているので、ヘッド・マウント・ユニット10に組み込まれた表示パネルを最大駆動温度内で管理する必要があると思料される。
 本実施形態では、図15に示すように、表示パネル1102を基板側の表面(すなわち、発光面の裏面)からヒート・シンク1105によって排熱する、という冷却構造となっている。ここで、カバー・フレーム1104の光軸方向の高さは、ヒート・シンク1105を取り付けた際に、表示パネル1102の裏面とヒート・シンク1105の間に空間ができる寸法としている。取り付け前に、対向する表示パネル1102の裏面とヒート・シンク1105の間の間隙に、熱伝導性グリースを充填しておく。また、組み立てる際に、表示パネル1102の裏面又はヒート・シンク1105に、あらかじめ適量の熱伝導性グリースを塗布しておく。したがって、ヒート・シンク1105を取り付けると、熱伝導性グリースは展延され、表示パネル1102の裏面とヒート・シンク1105の間の一定面積に充填された状態になる。ここで、熱伝導性グリースには、隙間から垂れたり、流れ出したりしないような、適正な粘度とチクソ性を有するものを使用することが好ましい。
 また、表示パネル1102の6軸調整固定によるヒート・シンク1105に対する表示パネル1102の位置の寸法ばらつきが生じるが、図示のヒート・シンク1105並びに熱伝導性グリースを用いた冷却構造はこの寸法ばらつきを吸収することができるという効果もある。
 なお、本明細書の開示の技術は、以下のような構成をとることも可能である。
(1)画像を表示する表示パネルを含む表示パネル部と、前記表示パネル部を取り付ける部位と一体的に形成されたレンズを有し、前記表示パネルが表示する映像に対して光学処理する接眼光学部と、映像信号を処理する映像信号処理部と、
 前記映像信号処理部で処理された映像信号に基づいて、前記表示パネルを駆動する表示制御部と、を具備する頭部装着型表示装置。
(2)前記取り付ける部位を有するレンズは、透明樹脂成形レンズからなり、前記取り付ける部位が一体成形される、上記(1)に記載の頭部装着型表示装置。
(3)前記取り付ける部位は、前記透明樹脂成形レンズに一体成形された複数の固着ピンからなり、前記固着ピンを前記表示パネル部側に穿設された固着穴に挿通させて、前記表示パネル部を前記接眼光学部に取り付ける、上記(2)に記載の頭部装着型表示装置。
(4)前記固着ピンは、前記透明樹脂成形レンズ表面上で、前記表示パネルの有効エリアに表示された映像の光が通過しない場所に配設される、上記(3)に記載の頭部装着型表示装置。
(5)前記複数の固着ピンは、前記透明樹脂成形レンズの光学中心に対し対称となる位置に配設される、上記(3)に記載の頭部装着型表示装置。
(6)前記接眼光学部は、複数のレンズを有し、前記取り付ける部位と一体となるレンズは、前記表示パネルに最も近接する、上記(1)に記載の頭部装着型表示装置。
(7)前記表示パネルを冷却する表示パネル冷却部をさらに備える、上記(1)に記載の頭部装着型表示装置。
(8)前記表示パネル冷却部は、前記表示パネルの基板側に面接触するヒート・シンクを有する、上記(7)に記載の頭部装着型表示装置。
(9)前記ヒート・シンクを前記表示パネルの基板側に面接触させたときに生じる間隙を充填する熱伝導性グリースをさらに有する、上記(8)に記載の頭部装着型表示装置。
(10)前記表示パネルの発光面を封止する表示パネル封止部をさらに備える、上記(1)に記載の頭部装着型表示装置。
(11)前記表示パネル封止部は、前記表示パネル保持部により固定された前記表示パネルの側面部分を覆うカバー・フレームと、前記カバー・フレームの開口部分を塞ぐ蓋部を有する、上記(10)に記載の頭部装着型表示装置。
(12)前記蓋部は、前記表示パネルの基板側に面接触するヒート・シンクである、上記(11)に記載の頭部装着型表示装置。
(13)前記ヒート・シンクを前記表示パネルの基板側に面接触させたときに生じる間隙を充填する熱伝導性グリースをさらに有する、上記(12)に記載の頭部装着型表示装置。
(14)画像を表示する表示パネルを含む表示パネル部と、前記表示パネル部を取り付ける部位と一体的に形成されたレンズを有し、前記表示パネルが表示する映像に対して光学処理する接眼光学部と、を具備する頭部装着型表示装置用の光学ユニット。
 以上、特定の実施形態を参照しながら、本明細書で開示する技術について詳細に説明してきた。しかしながら、本明細書で開示する技術の要旨を逸脱しない範囲で当業者が該実施形態の修正や代用を成し得ることは自明である。
 本明細書では、本明細書で開示する技術を、フロント・エンド・ボックス及びヘッド・マウント・ユニットからなるヘッド・マウント・ディスプレイに適用した実施形態を中心に説明してきたが、本明細書で開示する技術の要旨は特定のヘッド・マウント・ディスプレイの構成に限定されるものではない。表示パネルと光学系を一体化させるさまざまなタイプの表示装置に対して、本明細書で開示する技術を同様に適用することができる。
 要するに、例示という形態により本明細書で開示する技術について説明してきたのであり、本明細書の記載内容を限定的に解釈するべきではない。本明細書で開示する技術の要旨を判断するためには、特許請求の範囲を参酌すべきである。

  1.  画像を表示する表示パネルを含む表示パネル部と、
     前記表示パネル部を取り付ける部位と一体的に形成されたレンズを有し、前記表示パネルが表示する映像に対して光学処理する接眼光学部と、
     映像信号を処理する映像信号処理部と、
     前記映像信号処理部で処理された映像信号に基づいて、前記表示パネルを駆動する表示制御部と、
    を具備する頭部装着型表示装置。
  2.  前記取り付ける部位を有するレンズは、透明樹脂成形レンズからなり、前記取り付ける部位が一体成形される、
    請求項1に記載の頭部装着型表示装置。
  3.  前記取り付ける部位は、前記透明樹脂成形レンズに一体成形された複数の固着ピンからなり、
